![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ohms Question Now don't get all technical on me here. I know there are some electronics guys who want to jump all over this with Ohms law and all that. Well STFD ok? ![]() I ordered a 4x12 cab. I'm looking to either put V30's in it or some sort of Eminanace speaker, which a lot of folks seem to like. Problem being there's 800 different Eminance speakers. Anyhow, if I choose 8ohm speakers, which is probably the only choice right? 8 or 16? I'd imagine they don't sell 4ohm speakers. But what I'm wondering is how I should wire the speakers? Like this? 4 Eight (8) Ohm speakers wired in Series Parallel + a Total Load of 8 Ohms?Or any other ideas? Thanks in advance, and any recommendations on speakers from Eminance would be great. I had V30's in the past in cabs and didn't think much of them. I play the same stuff as most of you. Brutal Shit. I like the scooped mid sound although I usually keep my mids no less than noon. Scooping was a bad habit of mine in the past and in a band situation it doesn't fly. So I'm now use to the sound of non-cut-mids and I'm happy. I have a 2x12 right now with Celestion T12-100's in it that seem to sound ok to me. But was hoping not to spend $100.00 a speaker if possible. GUESS WHAT I'VE GOT? Fitzgibbons 5000 ultra synapse accellerator which allows me to think faster than the masses and phase in and out of the matrix at will. |

![]() | You need to match your load (speakers) to your output impedance (of your amp, should be able to find that somewhere). Then what you need to do is figure out the total impedance of your speakers, based on how you put them together. It doesn't really matter whether you get 8ohm or 16ohm speakers, because with either, you'll be able to come up with your necessary load. When you're parallel speakers together in series, the impedance just adds up. If you put them in parallel, just do 1/(1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + 1/R4). Since you're adding the same impedance values, you can just take the total impedance over the number of speakers. So 2 16 ohm speakers is 8 ohms. 3 is 5.3, and 4 would be 4ohms. So, I suppose if you were going to get 8ohm speakers, you'd be best off to wire them in series parallel. 8/2 + 8/2 = 8ohms, assuming an 8ohm output impedance. If you were going to use 16ohm speakers, you'd probably wire them all in parallel and add a 4ohm resistor, which does not seem like that great of an idea to me, so I'd say go with the 8ohms. As far as recommendations, I can't really help. I've not done a lot of swapping. |

![]() | can't say much about wiring, thats not my thing, but i can tell you that Swamp Thangs would be a great speaker option, especially if you into heavy/ death metal, they dont break up and they don't have all those harsh mids that the V30's have |

![]() ![]() | i would go with an 8ohm cab. most amps have 8 ohm speaker outs. and if its a tube amp that only has a 16 ohm out, you can use it and still be safe. |

![]() | I have a related question. If you have two 8 ohm cabinets and a head that produces 160 watts RMS at 8 ohms, would the result be a 4 ohm load? And if so, would that mean an output of 320 watts RMS? All I know for sure is that when I've used 2 cabinets with one of my Peavey amp heads, it's incredibly loud. In fact, I caused some temporary damage to my ear one time I tried it with the amp dimed out . . .
