The amp is very silent even when the high gain mode is engaged, until the tube goes microphonic, which is very soon after it is engaged or with a couple of tubes, the tube went microphonic the second I turned the hi gain on. Then there is insane amount of hiss, and even some weird overtones when I am playing. And the fact that when I tap the tube after the amp starts hissing, and it amplifies the tap, it's pretty clear on what's going on.

It is not that audible when the hi gain-mode is turned off, but when it is on... Nearly as loud as the playing itself!

I have owned my fair share of "high gain"-amps, like a Peavey 6505, Mesa Single Recto, Marshall DSL100 and the Triple Rectifier, and the guy has the nerve to say that the super loud hiss is part of the modern high gain amp personality, makes me a sad panda

So, I think I will visit the local store on monday and start a discussion concerning a new Invader.

You say it does it when you engage hi gain mode. is it permanent after that? like when you switch back down to lower gain, is the tube wrecked and permanently microphonic? or is it only when youre in high gain mode. if its temporary, id say its just the amp amplifying noise in your signal path. If its permanent, then its a real issue
Thanks mate!

Yep, the hiss is permanent, a least in the hi gain mode.

It was weird, when I turned the amp's power on after I received it, I put on the hi gain mode on when the amp was still on stand by, and yes, the tubes were making the usual warming up noises, but when I put the hi gain mode on, the noise of tubes warming up turned a bit weird... Loud and weird. It is pretty hard to explain, but it sounded like a big power surge was going through them.

I'd shoot ENGL a friendly email explaining your situation, at the very least it would alert them about an approved repairer that would rather bad mouth their product then admit he doesn't know how to fix it.

Someone get a move on and sell me your B7 or CST before I spend my money on something else I don't really want

I actually did that this morning

I sent a polite message concerning my problem, yet I only mentioned that the official ENGL repair guy only changed the tube, because I still didn't want to give the guy bad rep... I know, I am too soft at heart

And damn your avatar

I have pretty much tried everything, different power outlet's, cables, guitars etc. and the result is always the same. I did change the tube to an old EH tube I had lying around before trying the different (grounded) outlets, but the same thing happened to that tube as well, so it's not the power outlet etc.

So yeah, it's good that now I know for sure that it is not caused by anything in the room or in my signal chain. Now they can't go claiming that it is my gear etc. that is causing all this. A good precaution!

Call Engl directly. My Invader was dead silent and you obviously have a problem. If you get a hold of Engl you'll most likely be on the phone with Horst Langer who is the designer/main builder of the amps. He will get you taken care of. I have their number somewhere but I can't find it right now

Thanks J!

I actually sent ENGL e-mail this morning about my problem, so we'll see what they say. But on the other hand, the amp is still under warranty, so I guess I will take it back to the shop and have 'em figure it out, or get me a new one.

I had such a great time jamming with it today, I tried it through my Mesa Recto Standard 4X12" and my Orange PPC412, and it sounded great with both cabinets, but the overtones, the loud hissing, popping, crackling etc. really bummed me out. So, I put it back in to the box and made sure it was ready for delivery... again.

How has the SE been treating you?

man, that sucks!

i took my carvin to the shop on thursday, called the tech yesterday - apparently active electronics are too complex to do in-house so it's being sent out to their "2nd level"..

that thing better come back making a sound or ima be PISSED!

hopefully your invader issue gets sorted soon

3 cheers for free gear!
