I think "Grunge" is meant to be more of a Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden type of sound. For something as personal as distortion, you really need to use your own ears and play through it with your own guitar, if possible. Trying to buy a pedal based on a marketing department's description of it (or even other players' impressions) isn't the way to go.

If you have a shitty amp, a cheap pedal will only increase the "shitty" overall tone you get. In my humble opinion, you need to start looking for a better amp. Then, you won't need a cheap pedal up front to distort it.

Tube pedal or not, same debate. Have a look at this thread :

You would think that... But that's quite far from the sound it produces. I had the original DOD version a long time ago, and it was 'grungy' alright, bright and buzzy, with a ton of gain(close to a Metal Zone, but less annoying). It was actually kind of a fun pedal if you tuned it right (Think early Melvins), and it was tight. I liked my MXR Doubleshot Distortion better.

I guess it would work with a 7 string just fine, given the low cut it has to keep the low end tight.

If you can find a H&K Warp 7 pedal, those were pretty nifty.

You shake your ass but you're already dead.

I'd consider these way before the Ibanez, there is several models of each brand, so you should check them out regarding what your budget is :

- Roland Cube
- Tech 21 Trademark
- Vox Valvetronix
- Peavey

right now you say u have a shitty amp already and if you get something like the toneblaster, you ll end up with another shitty amp honestly. do you already have a cabinet or is your amp a combo?

i dont know if you play in a band of not but if you dont i would suggest gettin something like a Epiphone Valve Jr combo or head and 1 12 cab(less than $300 US) and put a nice distortion pedal in front of it such as a Line 6 Ubermetal, DOD Grunge, H&K Warp pedal, etc. and it ll do metal just fine. i currently use the VJ head and cab with Boss Metalzone and it sounds suprising good with my 7 string

and if you play in a band, then i would save up a little bit more money and buy a Peavey Valveking head or 212 combo(you can find either of them used for about $300-400, new for about $500-$600) and boost the fuck out of it with a tubescreamer or something of the sort in front and it ll do metal very well.

either of those options will cost you a bit more than what you are looking to spend, i know, but it ll be way better than investing more money into an amp that is already shitty or buying a brand new amp that wont be much better than the one you already have.

a valve junior for metal? no. i dont care what you put in front of it.

get an amp that's meant to get the kind of sounds you want to get.

candy, what's gonna be the amp budget?
