This probably depends on what amp you're talking about, but when the contenders are a Cube 30 and a Triple Recto, that's TOTALLY not true.

A Triple is about as unforgiving an amp as you can buy - if you sound better through it, then congratulations, your practice regiment seems to be a good one.

1. if it sounds fizzy, less gain ! note articulation and more punch ftw!

2. if you sound good on a tube amp, good. the SS argument makes sense when you consider that they are very clean. you know how you say practise legato clean, drew? *btw you need to PM me what to practise so's i can learn me some legato!)

3. i dont know how much you really need to worry about external things like tubes at this point man. spend some time, and learn your amp. this will take you probably 6 months to a year, you're new at this AND its a mesa. eventually you will know "if i turn the mids and the treble to here, i can achieve this kind of a tone". it takes a while to get to that point though.

dial in a tone you like, write the settings down. write down what kind of a sound that got you. maybe a month or so later, try messing with the EQ again - see if you like something else.

3 cheers for free gear!

Yep, stock tubes! I personally like 'em. People often dislike the red channel just for the reason that is is a bright channel, and even moreso when it is on the modern mode, but the red channel/modern is the tightest, most brutal channel on the Recto, so using very low presence settings will give you the tightness yet smooth highs without any fizz.

I just uploaded a soundclip on Soundclick just to show a bit how these settings sound like. SoundClick artist: TomiR - page with MP3 music downloads

Just two tracks, one left one right, no EQ, just low pass on 12khz. The rig was: Hellraiser C-7, Ibanez TS9, Triple Recto, Mesa Rectifier Standard 4X12", Shure SM57, Focusrite Saffire PRO 26

The playing itself is pretty sloppy, since my iso-headphones have not arrived yet, so it was a bit hard to hear what was coming through my headphones when the Recto was turned very loud beside me.

I am currently building a studio for myself, so that the amps (or at least the cabs) will be in a separate room so I can turn them very loud withput having to stand in the same room with 'em.

Thanks

Yep, no EQ, just the low pass filter at 12khz and that's it. Glad you like it!

The sm57 is like THE go to mic for metal. Dead Heart in a Dead World is just two sm57's and a dual rec with very little eq. Best tone ever.
