Suggest me an amp for around $800 US

I'm selling a guitar to buy an amp. It's just now that I realised with the money I could get a high end amp that i'd be very happy with. I need some info about whats out there for this price range and a short/long discription if you please.

Stuff I've been thinking about:

HD147
JSX
5150
XXX(?)

Some tones im into - Meshuggah, Bulb, Nevermore is a pretty big one. Necrophagist. Any awsome metal tone really.

JSX seems like a good choice because it supposedly can do a 5150 kind of sound, and I don't really want a 5150 because of the clean channel and because every boy and his dog has one around here nowadays.

What can you tell me about the HD147, specifically when compared to these other amps? I'd really like a dual or tripple rectifier but I think they're out of my price range.

I'll take any suggestions on board and look into it!

I don't care what anyone says, I think that SpiderValve sounds cool. It's right on your budget too. =)

a single recto is in that price range, and a little more would get you a dual.
i think line 6 gear can sound great, but it always craps out on you eventually so i wouldnt reccomend it.
You could also afford some DC mesa heads.

I think I'd most likely want to go the tube route rather than line 6 unless its a Vetta II or something. I'm competing with my mates Powerball and my other mates 5150.

How would you say the JSX metal rhythm tone compares to the 5150?

What are the oproximate second hand prices for Dual and Tripple Rectifiers? Any other Mesa Heads worth thinking about?

I've heard really mixed things about this, I wana go with something a little more "renowned" I guess you could say. I'm going secon hand for sure unless I find something new thats exactly what I want and still in my price range, mostly if its new for a certain price, I can find something better second hand for the same.

Well, if you are ordering from the states, You will only have about $500-$550 to spare (last time I acknowledged international shipping prices). Or if you are buying locally (for you) the used market may flucuate with what the US's is at the moment.

I would say a 5150/6505, and XXX pull about $500-$600 in the american market from what I see. I would go XXX, three channels and a "better" clean tone (tone is subjective, blahblah)

I'm not factoring in shipping prices. The $800 is all head money

mesa F-30 head?, DC-5, single rectoverb

peavey classic 50 head
triple X
JSX (i dont know why they're so cheap used lol)

and the JSX can get you into the 5150 ballpark IMO. its got a way more open and raw sound in the crunch channel vs the ultra channel. im pretty sure that most metalheads who tested it out agree that the crunch channel is full of win for metal rhythm.

3 cheers for free gear!

You could find a Mesa Mark III for that price, but its a slightly different style than the other amps mentioned; its more Metallica/Dream Theater, tight thrasy type tones, but still very good and versatile. A Mesa DC-5 would be nice as well, or maybe even an ENGL Fireball if you can find one used (bit more expensive) otherwise 5150's are hard to beat for bang for your buck!

I'm pretty sure you could get something other then thrash out of a MarkIII though

get an extra 50$ and buy a rectoverb?

having owned or played 3/4 of the amps on your list of considered amps, the Recto is, imo, better sounding than the amps on the list i've played, and you can get one used for about 50$ more than your budget.
