Voodoo mods?

I was considering getting my JMP-1 Voodoo modded down the road when I can afford it, but then I see some talk in this thread http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/gea...on-needed.html about their mods not being that good, and Regor saying that his other guitarist got his 5150 modded and that they ruined the amp.

I love my JMP-1 but it is lacking slightly in some aspects and the Voodoo mod sounds like it would do a lot of good for it so it's quite tempting, but theres no way in hell I'm going to pay $300 to get it modded if it's not going to sound $300 better, let alone worse... So I was wondering what the general thought about Voodoo mods is here, and if they are that bad can anyone recommend someone who does do a good job modding JMP-1's?

What I've heard of the voodoo mods seems to make all the amps sound like a voodoo amp. That's not a bad thing, per se, but it does seem to take a lot of the personality out of the amp.

I've heard exactly the same thing. If you want whatever you're playing to sound like a voodoo amp, then they'll figure out a way to do it. Not necessarily a BAD thing, just don't expect the revised tone to be very similar to the original unit. At all.

I got to play through a Voodoo modded Dual Rec. The mod neutered it, all of the aggression and mid grind was gone.

+100 I've owned a Voodoo-modded 5150 II. I bought it figuring I'd see why people loved the 5150 and 5150 II so much. It was horrible, took all the balls out of it and the cleans still sucked. Then I tried a non-modded 5150 II and was like, "ohhhhh... okay, I get it now. what the hell did he do to that amp when he modded it?!" From my personal experience, I wouldn't recommend his mods, or at least the one on the 5150. Neutered is the perfect description.

Hmm, I have a buddy with a voodoo modded triple rectifier along with the mercury magnetics output transformer and it is a beast. I really really like the tone of it. It still has balls to it and I can't see where someone would refer to as being neutered. Actually, I think it made it sound quite a bit more aggressive. I would compare the tone of it to my uberschall(which some people hate and others love) Where as before the triple sounded nothing like an uber. I have read a lot of bad things about voodoo but so far, I have heard nothing but good things with my ears.

My friend got a voodoo modded ADA mp1 and also had two stock ones and a three tube modded one. We listened and played through all of them. The voodoo modded one sounded clearer and would be perfect but, definately neutered and no longer for the metal guitarist. A week later I saw that he had posted it up on ebay..

Then I spoke to a local guy with a 5150 II that was modded, he had just sold it and was looking to get a stock one again, he said that it also lost its nutsack... While I would buy a voodoo amp, I probably would never get anything modded by them..

I'm considering doing just that. I've got a MP-1, but I was thinking of getting another one to mod and keeping the other one as stock. I love the stock sound, but from what I've heard of the clips on voodoo amps I really like.

My purpose isn't to increase the gain though. I'd like to have a decent amount of gain, something along the lines of what I've got now just different sounding, but I'd also like to get that vintage chimey clean too.

I guess my want is an old vintage Plexi sound. I can always throw a pedal in front of it if I want.

There's a guy on adadepot.com that mods up JMP-1s as well. He also does all the MP-1 mods. And if I'm not mistaken he also runs the adadepot forum. If you look him up, in his signature is his site and you can check out all the mods he does.

I've never had any problems with their mods. I had a JCM900 custom modded, retubed, and had some add on controls put in. That amps was tons better and closer to what I was hearing in my head. I traded that for a Laney AOR and had it modded a couple of weeks ago, it's an 80's metal machine. Brown sound to Winger to Laaz Rockitt. I have the newest version of the mod and the new version of his feel control. I gotta get some clips posted.

Well it sounds like it would be quite a risk getting my JMP-1 modded. If I ever do want to get it modded hopefully I can pick up a second one to get modded to compare and see how I like it. It would be a long time before I could afford that though so maybe it would be a waste of money. I like the JMP-1 enough as it is anyway so a mod is really not even necessary. A BBE Sonic Maximizer helps it out quite a bit IMO, and I have a G-Major on the way and I havn't even gotten my TS7 Chaos modded yet so hopefully between all that stuff I can make it sound as awesome as I want
