tip about those pesky line 6 amps (lol):

TURN THE GAIN DOWN.

damn does it ever make a nice difference when using the higher gain channels

3 cheers for free gear!

no it doesn't, because Line 6 amps don't clean up worth a shit imo . they get even more plastic and sterile sounding in those applications imo.

whatever

just a question for the roland guys, since i have never really looked at that amp very closely, do you have to use a distortion pedal to get good distortion or does it come with built in distortion heavy enough for metal?

i'm not really doubting your results . just sharing my experience with various Line 6 gear i've recorded with and owned. i don't find Line 6 good for anything to be honest. and there are much better options for modelling amps out there.

true on both counts.

i was expecting to loathe the new spiders, and i didnt. i wouldnt buy one, however for home use they are decent lil amps.

prada, the Cube's have enough distortion - its knowing how to EQ the amp well that will help most.

the last time i got to use a cube (cube 30), i didnt know most of what i know now about amps and EQ'ing and guitars etc, so i dont know how convincing i could get one to sound. R-fier setting was fun though

yeah, that would be wise, its always advisable to go and test things out and see what sounds best to you, on that note however, i would buy online if you possibly can, i just don't trust local music stores (unless your going to something like a guitar center) because they tend to over price too much

for instance, and this is on a used amp head, there was a used marshall jcm 2000 dsl 100 watt head for $1500, it was pretty beat up too, and i researched it and found it new on an ebay store for $1600, which for me is pretty ridiculous, and on top of that they sell most of their pedals for the retail price ( which is usually 20-40 bucks more, which is alot when dealing with pedals, so yeah, needless to say, i dont buy from them, i do however take my stuff to get worked on there, cuz i actually trust the tech there, seeing as how i took lessons from him for a couple of years, and not only is he good at what he does, he also knows how i like everything set up on my guitars and such, so i dont have to tell him over and over, and he usually gives me a discount, pretty good deal, but i am way off topic now

moral: dont trust local music store jack offs that you dont know very well

Nah, there's plenty of gain on tap, you can get some very excellent distortion from the roland cubes. I use my TS7 with it, as it makes it just that bit nicer, but I certainly wouldn't say you have to use it.
