Rack washers, humfrees, etc...

So what do you guys use for the screw washers in your racks.

For years I've used Humfrees, these:

Humfree Rack Tabs from zZounds.com!

But I find it incredibly difficult to install these with big 40 pound power amps like my 50/50 or 2:90. They slide around too much when I'm trying to get the screw in the hole.

Would regular plastic washers work just as well in isolating the rack unit from the rack chassis? What do you use?

They're not necessary for properly designed equipment. If you're using a lot of 80's stuff, you might find them useful.

what if you set the back of the rack on the floor, and mounted them from the "top"?

yea, those were a bitch with my 2:100, but a flat head screw driver used as a pry bar and a lot of pinched fingers got them in.

I have in the past used nylon washers on the front and back of the rack screws to isolate, but the problem is the threads can touch the inside of the ear and of course, conduct through to the rails.

edit whoops wrong link

these look like what you need

that's the only way to do it, but still with a small rack like mine, 6 spaces, it's a tight fit in there. I usually have to remove the rack piece above it too just to get it in there, and at least one of the damn humfrees ALWAYS slips when putting the amp in the rack. No fun.

Hey vince, from what I remember hearing over at Huge Racks Inc., you shouldn't use Humfrees on your power amp, unless it specifically is causing a problem.

Is it bad if the rack unit is touching the rack rails or something? Sorry, this is the first time I've ever heard of this. I just use little nylon washers that came with my rack and I just use them on the front. I have nothing between any of my rack units and the rails.

You can get a 60-cycle hum, basically a loud buzzing sound if some rack units are not raised from the rack chasis. Some racks, some units this is a problem, others not so much.

I've just always played it safe and used humfrees on all my gear.

Hmm thats never been an issue for me and I've been using a rack setup for well over a year. Guess I'm lucky. I'll be aware of it in the future though.
