![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 5150 II first impressions. I got my Nailbomb 7 (Alnico Magnet, not Ceramic ) wired up today at my techs place. So while I was there, I decided to test the 5150 II I bought off of eBay (It was broken, if you want the details, go here. NAD!! (lol) 5150 content (56k... Only 1 pic))I always thought the Lundgren M7 was a good pickup (Which is what was in my guitar before I got the BKP) It was loud, and VERY clear, but it wasn't the pickup I was looking for. It had too much output for me, and I couldn't really get a good clean out of it. Now, tone is subjective... But.... Seriously, the first time I plugged in with the lundgren, all I got was mud out of the low end when hitting power chords, palm mutes were tight, but it mudded up so bad... Plus it lacked the "punch" the M7 was supposed to be known for(unless I used an OD, in which case all I could get was DJENT tones)... Maybe I just didn't know how to work with it, since I've never had a pickup that was extremely gainy... But the first note I hit with the BKP was pure sex. I plugged into my 5150 II for the first time into a marshall cab with celestion g12k65's and I thought I was going to DIE because it sounded so perfect. The low end on the Nailbomb is TIGHTER than the M7 (despite the fact that ceramic magnets are supposed to be tighter) and the clean tone is to die for(Again, maybe I just didn't know how to work with them?). I coil tapped them, and ran it in the center position and it sounded like an acoustic. I'm so glad I got the Alnico magnet... I really enjoyed the tone comming out of the 65's. The low end was there, it was tight, with just the right ammount of chunk, even on the low Bb. The highs were smooth and clear... It was just... Amazing (I wonder if the G12 75's are similar to the 65's, because i WANT that tone!) Then we dimed the pre gain on the clean channel (Crunch switch off) and put the post gain to 6 to let the power tubes distort... This bitch cranked like an old Marshall... And goddamn was it LOUD. Then for shits my tech plugged me into another marshall cab with G12m 25 Blackbacks, and I was instantly propelled into Meshuggah Djent heaven. The 5150's lead channel produced a perfect Meshuggah clone(circa Chaosphere/DEI) with the 25's. Then we plugged BOTH cabinets in... If I were to be killed while listening to my 5150 II running into this full stack, i'd die the happiest man on the planet. The 25's tightness with the added bass and smoother highs of the 65's created this supertone. It has me seriously contemplating getting a few greenbacks and g12 75's and putting them in an X pattern in my cab... (unless I can get the 65's and black backs of eBay or something) I don't know how the Gbacks and the 75's compare to the Bbacks and 65's. But honestly... I couldn't be happier with this pickup, and how the 5150 II came out. When I played the 6505+ in GC, it had the tone, but it didn't have any sustain... Like, when I'd hit a note, the distortion would fade really quick, so to compensate I tried turning the gain up, but it would mud up. I figured I could just put my Bloody Murder in front of it to get some boost. But we put a Tung-Sol Gold pin in V1, and then matched 4 JJ's, and a Sovtek that tested really gainy, and now that sustain problem (Perhaps the 6505+ at GC had a bad tube or somthing). It's got all the power I wanted, and the tone I loved about the 6505+. Hell even the clean tone ended up a tad glassier than I remembered. All in all... I'm happy with my tone ATM. What sucks is I won't be able to play it more until next weekend because of schoolwork. ![]() I'm completely ecstatic! In any language that you learn to speak -- love is twisted and defined as weak TheMissing's GAScon status: GAScon 3... New geetar... But now I need to find a new pickup... |
