Question Multi-effects Units for >$500 Buying advice

Okay, folks, here's the deal. I'm giong to do my part in turning our economy around with my incalculably generous tax rebate and get some sort of music stuff. If that doesn't turn the economy around, what will?

The choices (I'm leaning towards rack mount) are Boss GT-Pro, TC Electronics G Major, Digitech (the old 1220 and their newer GSP1101), Rocktron Xpression. I'd also consider the Boss GT-10. The ability to add an "expression" pedal would be nice, as well as USB connectivity to the computer for recording.

So what's the word on these things, eh? Who's got and who likes what? I await your learned replies . . .

Find out the
SHOCKING reason why Last Rites was called "scariest band ever" by the San Francisco MusiCalendar. . .

Do you need it just for FX, or do you need it to provide distortion? If you just want FX and nothing else (delay, chorus, reverb) then get the g-major. If you need distortion or amp modelling of some kind as well, then don't get the g-major, as it doesn't do any of that. However, for effects it sounds lush and amazing.

Sounds like he wants amp modeling for USB recording.

I was thinking about getting a gt-pro and use it with my 5150 in the 4 cable method so it'll be my clean sound/effects and I'll have a nice lead sound and my rythem sound from my 5150. Its either that or the 1101, but I like the fact the gt-pro has a shit ton of effects but the 1101 has spillover and shit. Anyone have the gt-pro to comment on the effects and shit?

my girlfriend says i'm totally METAL!
balls.

I had originally been a bit dismissive of the modeling thing, but after having looked into it more, I'm beginning to give it more serious thought, since I may well use it for a recording interface. Unfortunately, the local GC doesn't have any of these models in stock, and I really want to try them out before spending the money, even if there's a return policy. I'd rather avoid the hassle if I can.

Thanks for the info!

If you're serious about wanting to boost the American economy, you may want to consider buying an American product. No sense in sending your money to Japan (Roland/BOSS) or Denmark (TC). Sure, just about everything is made in China, but at least the profits would stay with an American company if you bought Rocktron or Digitech.

Just something to think about...

guitar --> GT-6/8/10/PRO input
GT FX Send --> amp input
amp FX Send --> GT FX Return
GT output --> amp FX Return

This allows you to use your own amp's preamp for amp gain, and the GT's compression, wah and distortion effects in front of your preamp and time-based effects in the loop.

I'll confess those remarks were made in jest as this is littl made in the US that's really very good. It'll take a lot more than $600 apiece to bail out the economy . . .
