It's interesting how your opinions about gear changes over time.

I was just reading this thread that Mike started about three years ago, and I was quite amused by my following two posts:

I don't particularly like Rectos, myself. That's not because they "suck" or anything, just because no matter how I tweak them (and I've been playing mesas for years, so they may be notoriously interactive on their EQ sections, but I'm used to that, so I can sit down with a mesa and dial something pretty solid in a couple minutes), I just can't get the sort of sound I'm looking for from them.

If you want feral chainsaw grind and chunk, the Red channel is just a thing of beauty, and while that's just an evil sound that's not really what I look for in a rhythm sound, and definitely not what i look for in a lead sound. I want something very liquid and smooth, with quite a lot of sustain but clear articulation. On the Recto, in the Red channel, i just couldn't find the sweet spot where the sustain was nice and open but it didn't sound too "gain-y" for my tastes, and on the orange channel, I had the same problem coupled with the fact it "felt" a bit sluggish. I could get some great mid-gainy crunchy rhythm sounds, some stupidly heavy high gain chunk, and I've always LOVED the clean channel on a Recto. but, I just couldn't dial up a lead tone I liked to save my life.

So, for me, the Rectifiers are maybe three or four trick ponies, and while they're great tricks, they're ones that just aren't particularly useful to me. Maybe with like a Tube Screamer out front I could get a tone I'd like, but I'd rather get a distortion I love straight from the amp, rather than relying on pedals.

the Nomad, on the other hand, was plug in, eyeball the EQ, flip it off standby, and instant love. On Modern Channel 3, it can approximate Recto aggression, but while it never gets quite as extreme, that's perfectly gfine by me.

(Incidentally, this is why I was more impressed by the Road King - it CAN do the Red Channel of a Recto to a T, but it's also quite a bit more flexible. I only spent a minute or so on one because I was afraid if I played any longer I'd want one, lol, but that first impression was very good).

(oh, also, I think that barring the RK, the Singles were the best sounding Rectos I've played)

I should probably give one another go, I've been dialing up brighter, edgier tones on my nomad these days because they record better now that my sound card doesn;t blow, and maybe a Rect-o-Verb 50 would be another nice way to get me into that sort of tone...

This is funny because, well, I now own a Rectoverb. In retrospect, I just didn't know how to dial them in, even though it's pretty clear at the time I thought I did.

It's sometimes nice to go back and read your old thoughts on gear though, partly because it's interesting to see how your taste in tone has changed over the years (my tone was way more Eric Johnson back then; these days it's got a bit more harmonic sizzle to it), and partly because at some level the occasional reminder that sometimes despite your best efforts you're still a closed-minded idiot is probably good for you.

me some year ago: "I want to try a 7-string for fun, but I'd never really need that, there's even 8-strings but thats like total overkill" (well somewhere along those lines)

me today: I hardly touch anything with less than 7-strings cause I always get to the point where I miss something and I'm already sure I will some day buy an 8 and/or a baritone 6 to tune in 5th or something like that

Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post

CaptainD00M is a jewel in the rough
There was a time when I hated Ibanez, wouldnt touch anything that had a floyd Rose or similar, wanted only mahogany bodies and set necks, would only play marshall, thought the idea of a seven string was madness, and thought delay was lame...

Now, i tend not to touch marshall's, instinctivly reach for the whammy (or as satch calls them the 'wang bar'), love delay to bits, Dont really like set necks, find mahogany to dense at times and love Ibanez to bits...

As for sevens... well thats pretty much explained by my being here.

My taste in tone has changed a bit, I used to be all about a power metally style tone, now I'm more about a tight yet full Death Metal-esque tone, however, my amp company hasn't changed, just the amp.

I've only been 7 string exclusive for about 6 months though. I remember back when I went to university, I didn't even take my 7 string because I thought I wouldn't use it much
