RACKMOUNTED preamps w/ FX for metal

OK,
I'm seriously thinking of returning to my roots & picking up a rackmounted preamp w/ FX that does metal well. I'll problably run it into a Mesa 2:100 power amp.
* Shannon has been bitten by the Mesa bug after recently purchasing TWO Recto 2x12 cabs.
In the past, I had used a blackface Rocktron Chameleon for years, but I'm looking for something with even more options. DON'T MENTION LINE 6 because that's already a given. What else is out there? The Rocktron Prophesy had crossed my mind, but I'm curious to hear your recommendations & why. I've got some money burning a whole in my pocket, so do your worst!

And.....GO!

The prophesy is sweet. Great cleans and effects. The dirty stuff isn't going to compare to pure tube pre's but it has very deep editing so you can get close. The direct recording is also good, better than line 6 if you ask me.

I know people are saying great things about those Axe FX things, and they certainly seem versatile.

I've used a GX700 for years - there's a GT Pro available now that I got to try out recently and I really was diggin it. It's probably going to be my next gear purchase.

The Axe FX isn't really a preamp though AFAIK

I can't really suggest a preamp w/FX. I prefer having separate units for each job. Maybe the Boss GT-Pro?

Is there any particular reason you want the preamp to have effects built in?

It's just as much of a preamp as a POD or Chamelion.

Primarily because I suck supremely at midi mapping & it's easier to have an all-in-1 unit.

But, I'd be open to suggestion on just preamps too.

i ran a Rocktron Voodu Valve in my portable/practice rig for years, into a Mesa 20/20 or 50/50 and a 1x12 or 2x12. it has both pre- and post-gain parametric EQ, which is a great and really underrated tool for shaping gain tones. just like on Mark series amps, you can boost the pre-gain bands for rounder or fatter tones and use the post-gain to tighten things up for thunderous crunch sounds.

it never sounded as good as a real tube preamp running tubes at full voltages, but it was a great mix of portability and versatility.

I've only spent a short amount of time with it but the GT10 is a pretty slick all in one deal IMO. MIDI capable too.
