New amp advice

Right, I'm looking at helping find an amp for one of the other guitarists I'm in a band with.

We're based in the UK, would be fine getting second hand stuff and the budget is around £700 or so. Preferably this would be something we could find in a shop so he can at least have a go on it to see if he likes it or not, but that's not mandatory.

The amp must be in a head/cab format as it's just way easier that way for gigs that already have cabs there. The cab is not essential at the moment because I have a spare one he can most likely borrow (that not a certainty at the moment though) and I might be able to get him to spend a bit more on a cab further down the line.

In terms of sound I'm looking for something that can do:
1. decent clean
2. some sort of tight punchy aggressive gain sound.

To give you an idea, he plays mostly rhythm stuff. Here's the myspace site with some tracks on : MySpace.com - Infractor - Birmingham, UK - Metal / Death Metal / Thrash - www.myspace.com/infractor

I was hoping to point him in the direction of an Engl Fireball, but he's reluctant to spend that much. I have plenty of experience with the Fireball, it would suit the style and blends really nicely with my Cornford.
Because he's not going for the Fireball, I was thinking something like a 5150II or 6505+ would fit pretty well, although I'm not sure how much those go for s/h.

Was hoping for any thoughts or suggestions on this, cheers guys =)

Has he tried a Fireball? I think that'd work well, the 5150's obviously would too, always great amps.

Hows about a JSX, a Triple X, some Mesa's go on eBay for around that price?

I believe it was James who said that a DSL with boost isnt tooo shabby.

and it'll definitely fit his budget! what about a 2-channel laney?

tip: keep the gain low for tight punch, works ridiculously well

I like DSL's, I will be picking one up again at some point. They do,however, need to be LOUD to get the best out of them. never tried it with a boost though, but still want to own one (along with an 800 )

Anyway, second hand you should be able to score a 5150 II or 6505+ quite easily for that amount of cash

Otherwise, I'd recommend keeping an eye on ebay, as occasionally some good stuff comes up. Don't discount the marshall jubilee and anniversary heads either, avoid jcm900's.

Yeah, my mate has had a play through a Fireball but again he doesn't really wanna drop that much on an amp. If only I could find find a nice cheap second hand one.

I had thought about Marshall and Laney. I have owned both a Laney GH50L and a DSL before and I liked both of them for different reasons, but I don't think they have the right sort of sound for what we're going for. Although I never tried the DSL with a boost either so we might have to go have a look into one of those, should be fairly easy as Marshalls seem to be about the most common amps about around here.

Cheers, I'll keep my eyes open for those other Marshall heads. And yeah I guess it'll be mainly keeping an eye on used stuff and hoping something good turns up soon.
