Volume Pedal in the FX Loop V.S. Out Front

someone told me it makes a huge difference in what the pedal actually does? what exactly would the differences be?

I would think that with it out front, it would be like attentuating a hot guitar signal before it hits your preamp. (Assuming you have your guitar volume maxed and are using a boost of some sort) Also you can pull off some volume swells rather easily with a volume pedal in the front.

As far as in the loop, the only thing I can think of that would be cool/useful would be this:

You could crank the channel/preamp volume(saturate your preamp tubes) then regulate the signal going into your poweramp.( with the master volume cranked also) So I guess sort of like a attentuater in a way. I have never tried this, but in theory, I could see it working.

Yeah, with it in front, you tend to be controlling the amount of signal being sent to distort, so not only are you swelling the volume upwards, you are increasing distortion as you bring the volume pedal up. In a sense you are going from a low volume clean tone to a higher volume distorted.

Do it in the loop, and as long as its with an amp where most of the distortion comes from the preamp, you are going to have an already distorted signal, which will lower in volume, and then as you raise it just get louder only (and slightly more distorted as the power tubes kick in)

supertruper1988 is a jewel in the rough
i run mine as the last thing in my fx loop after my delays and everything it is nice cuz it controls the entire volume for my rig.

that being said i wnt a second one as the first thing in my signal chain for stuff like volume swells etc

I've been wondering about this too. Would a volume pedal in the loop be good for fade ins and fade outs? I did that all the time when I had my POD xtL.

Before the amp: this will have a similar effect like the volume knob on your guitar. Lowering volume here will also result in less gain. Delay or reverb AFTER the vol pedal will still decay at normal volume.

In the loop: this will have a similar effect like simply lowering the master volume of the amp. If set after delay/reverb, it'll also affect its spillout volume.

For volume swells i find that a volume pedal BEFORE the amp, or just using the guitar's volume knob, sounds best.

For adjusting the overall volume of your rig without affecting the input signal: FX-loop

now I'm gasin for a volume pedal. Is the Visual Sound LED Pedal any good? I like the concept of the LEDs.
