Quick question on dying valves

Hey guys, There's a guy who wants to trade his Laney VC50 for my VH100R. I'm pretty interested as I've been after a combo and a straight trade would be great for my current financial situation. But he says that the clean channel is a bit weird as the sound cuts in and out a little bit. Could this be just a dying pre-amp valve? If it is then I'll go with the deal, a few pounds on a couple of new valves doesn't bother me much.
