HELP! I need more mids :(

so now that i've had the fireball for a while i noticed that while it may sound great on it's own, it could use more mids to help it cut better. The EQ doesn't seem to alter the sound as drastically as i would like it to when this thing is cranked at 6-7 (which is our band practice volume)... Could this be because of the 60W poweramp? Anyway, this is a bit frustrating since the main reason i upgraded my previous amp was to have an amp that cuts better in a mix. Damn i now miss the recto i had borrowed...

so what to do ?

upgrade to a powerball? would the 'focused mids' setting and the increased headroom will make it cut better?

since i'm a bit short on funds, i don't have money for a recto (unless it's a 2ch, but i need cleans).
Trading the fireball for a powerball wouldn't cost me too much on the other hand.

has anybody played both amp (fireball and powerball) in a band situation and knows if the powerball cuts better?!?

thanks a lot guys!

what's your EQ look like? are you boosting it?

maybe stick a modded-for-true-bypass boss GE-7 in the loop, if you have one?

3 cheers for free gear!

throw an MXR 10 band EQ in the loop and boost away.

Can I be the devil on your shoulder?

modded TS7 for boost (drive at 0, tone at half, lvl at about 3/4)

le fireball settings:

gain: 10 o'clock
lows: 12 o'clock
mids: 16 o'clock
highs: 13 o'clock
presence: 10 o'clock

bottom and bright disengaged

i'm running it into a V30 loaded orange PPC412

as for EQ'ing in the loop: i've tried to use the g-major's EQ but while it somewhat works at moderate volumes, you will barely hear a difference when the amp's cranked... which seems to be similar to what happens with the amp's EQ. I guess the louder it gets, the more you hear the poweramp and less of the preamp. This was especially noticeable with the dual rec i had, but at least the EQ was still effective on it...

question: did you set the EQ at band practise volume, or home volume? set it at band practise volume.

are you using hot or vintage mode on the TS7? TS mode will give you more cut as you occupy less low end frequencies that way.

Never played the Fireball, but I NEVER had problems cutting in the mix with the Pball I had.

I used focused mids on, and I also had an EQ in the loop (not for 'more' mids, but to sharpen up the upper mids a bit).

with that said, an EQ in the loop of the fireball may be the remedy to your solution. also, use an OD in front and turn the 'tone' up on it; it will help make it cut better. Kill some highs on the amp when you do this though, as it will sound a bit sharper. In the end, it will definitely give you more upper-mid cut.

I say try an EQ in the loop before you get a new amp.

Ramen!

i can't imagine any quality high gain amp (especially an ENGL) not having enough mids on tap... if that's really the case, even with a TS in front of it, i'd say it's time to find a new amp...

The fireball/Pball i think are the outliers.

They have enough mids, don't get me wrong, but it's not enough of the 'right' mids (if that makes sense). They are present, but not as dynamic as other amps IMO

it's weird because my pball didn't sound scooped at all, but the mids were 'sharp' enough - I guess that's the way i'd put it.
