this is exactly how i feel about ENGL. i really don't have anything bad to say about them as i've only played an Invader 150 (a questionable one at that...).

i've always searced for MY sound, and really don't want to sound like anybody else. it can get a little difficult to do that when you're using the same amp everybody else on the planet is using.

and from you, of all people! haha.

I'd be interested in what Joe and biggness have to say about the other's amp if they swapped..

3 cheers for free gear!

I do stand by my RJM Amp Gizmo. Very useful!! and Yes the Ultra Lead is a unforgiving amp, but that just adds to the reward. If you can play on an Ultra Lead then you can REALLY play, if you know what I mean. The joy of not hiding behind an amp with lots of gain is just one of the many reasons this amp will make smile. Don't get me wrong, this amp has lots of gain, but it's very different than most amps, in the way that it comes on. It's a very clean distortion. Clarity out the habingeranoodelator!! I think of the distortion on it as a distorted clean channel. I guess really you just have to experience one to know what I am talking about.

The Ultra Lead has a very distinct tone. And I looooooove it. It reminds me of a super uber retarded hopped-up ultra fandanglemaded tight brown sound. In a way. And I'm tellin you, pinch harmonics on this thing SCREAMS!!! Its just an awesome amp.

With all this being said, I still would like to try an Invader 100 just to see what al hoopla is about. Though, I do gather from Shaman(think that was his name) that the Invader is very close a Triple Rectifier tone wise. Sooo, I dunno.

I say you keep playing around with it Joe. That said, if you keep it until after the summer and still feel the way you do now, let me know. I'll give you back what you paid for it.

biggness, your description of "distorted clean channel" remind me of a time when i recorded my YCV80 with the direct out, and the tone i got, you could hear a clean tone, and you could hear distortion over it. it was weird.

That's the one and only reason why I refused to give them a chance till last year I wouldn't buy one because everybody else wanted/had one and it seemed trendy. Then I thought there may be a reason everybody speaks so highly of them and I was right.

I refuse to touch a 5150 for the same reasons. I've played them before and wasn't too impressed but the fanboyism is what keeps me away.

Oh yeah, the 5150 was another amp i stayed away from, plus hearing them and not liking the buzzy sound. But, since I found one cheap, and biased it, well, it's a one trick pony, but, very usefull for recording to have one lying around! Rebiased and retubed those things I do really like, on their own, well, can take it or leave it. The tubes do make a huge difference though, the one I got was a block letter and had some of the original old preamp tubes in (when they were not skimping on them) and some JJ's, which explains why it just sounded like what everyone said they should. Glad I got one, as it's cheap, cheerfull, and aggressive as hell!

And the ENGL's, well, it's one of those things were I'll wait for the next big thing to come along, and then buy one that someone is selling cheap! I still want an SE though, it's the exception, as it appeals to the "look at all the buttons" nerd inside me!

OMG its teh attack of the CAE amp you bought and then wished you hadn't.

4hours away= 8 hours round trip to make sure you like an amp, vs. the couple of days Ebay would take to sell the invader, the shipping time on the VHT, then if you dont like it, selling VHT on Ebay, and the shipping time on the invader.
