If anything, I'd say a 10" speaker is pretty much the bare minimum for a practice amp that will sound good. Unless it's a micro cube.

For 30W combo amps I can recommend Line 6 Spider II, comes with 12" celestion and is suprisingly good tone for a modelling amp. Comes with some built in effects, headphones, CD input, very good amp
