Marshall JMP-1 preamp
Anyone have any experience with this piece?
From everything I've read it seems pretty solid and trustworthy. I played through it at the local GC, but since I wasn't real familiar with the interface, I just ended up using the presets and didn't real get a good feal for how tweakable the sounds were. My main attraction to this piece is it's MIDI-capabilities. I doubt I'll buy another amp/pre-amp again without MIDI.

i have had one for about 4 years and it has never let me down i don,t use it now cos i have my randall.
the jpm 1 is a great amp apart from they do lack control in the middle eq you can,t scoop the the middle out much at all but the distortion sound is very nice and very clear so all in all i think the jpm 1 is a good all round amp. |

you may consider trying out the TriAxis. By far the most versatile and flexible midi ube pre.
No Pain, No gain.

I don't know if I can justify the price difference though. However, I can pick up a slightly used Triaxis for about as much as a new JMP. But I can get a used JMP for about $500 or so. |

The JMP-1 can do some things very well - I used one for about six years. It's not as "organic" as some others, and isn't as flexible as, say, the TriAx, but there's some good vintage and modern Marshall tones, and some decent cleans. I finally got rid of mine when I went Recto, but I really only used three sounds, anyway.
Another popular - and slightly more flexible/aggressive - Midi preamp is the Rocktron Pirahna, if you're looking used... |

It's really hard for me to describe the sound I am looking for out of an amplifier.
Honestly, I don't use a WHOLE lot of different settings on my current amp. I have a Marshall VS65R 1 12" combo (Valvestate) that I use. It only has 2 channels, "Clean" and "Overdrive". There is no gain setting on the clean channel (one of the few things I dislike about it), and because of this the clean channel tends to be a little bright. The Overdrive channel however is very nice for my playing style. I rarely turn the gain below full, the treble is set at full, the bass usually sits at 50% (sometimes slightly less), and the mids vary between 30% and 65%. I tend to have my bass settings lower than most guitarists due to the overwhelming bass characteristics of the stock pickups in my ESP. They get very muddy on low notes if you turn the bass above 50%. Forget about using the neck pickup on low notes (anything below low-E). Basically I'm looking for a very aggressive, "metal sounding", amplifier. I've played through Mesa Rec's and LOVE their sound paired up with my guitar. I've also played through a Randall Solid-state that I loved (wasn't impressed by their tube stuff). Everyone raves on and on about tube amplification, but it seems that the couple of nicer Solid-state pieces I've played through seem to have a VERY aggressive, high-gain sound that I like. But I did have the opportunity to play through a Triaxis powered setup (Simulclass 2:80 I believe, with 2 4x12 open back Mesa Cabinets). I also had brought my OH-SO-AMAZING dbx 266xL compressor that I cannot live without to add to the rack. The guy was a local ebayer trying to sell the Triaxis and I told him I wanted to play it first. He invited me over that afternoon and I brought my stuff to give myself an accurate idea of what sound I would be getting. I was MORE than impressed with the versatility and flexibility of this piece, but I couldn't get the guy to go down to what I was willing to pay. Nice guy though. |

I used to have a Triaxis and really only used one sound. And it was a great sound. Nothing wrong with that.
