Help me stop scooping my mids!

every amp ive owned, from my valveking, to my dual rec, to now my roadster.. ive always wanted a "tight brutal" sound with heavy gain and all that. but it just doesnt sound right without my mids turned all the way down. i know its very bad for when im soloing, playing with the band.. but i just dont have a way around it. perhaps you guys can help me out. ive got an okay crunch going on my roadster now with the mids at 9 oclock, treble at around 1.5 oclock. bass at 12 oclock, and presense at around 9 oclock as well. and my gain at around 2 oclock. im not the greatest at eqing, and hopefully you guys can give me some stuff i can try out? anything would be appreciated.

Lower the bass a bit, turn the mids up to around 11 o'clock, use a boost in front of the amp if possible such a Tube Screamer, and make sure the speakers are high quality. Usually scooping mids is just a way to mask the bad tone of a rig, since mids are what pretty much make a guitar's tone. Basically you're hollowing out the fundamental frequencies of the guitar that way. If you're finding you need to scoop the mids to get a tight/brutal sound, something is definitely not right. Be it tubes, pickups, settings, speakers, whatever. I'm sure some Roadster fans will chime in with more detail, but that's my take.

PS: That doesnt mean you have to crank the mids, but often scooping is an indication something is awry, most often speakers and pickups.

TS: drive: 2 tone: 5 leve: 8

gain: not that high! this is key for a good, tight tone IMO!

it sounds good when you are by yourself, yes? get someone else to play for you at a band practise, just knock out some riffs w/ the band - stand back and listen.

record a band practise. chances are, your home EQ wont work quite so well in a band context.

i have my JSX eq'd so that it'll sound great and be heard when i play with people - im also fortunate that i like that tone when i'm just playing alone as well.

3 cheers for free gear!

To me it actually sounds like you are just used to that sound. Put the mids up, and play with it for a while, and fight the hesitation to scoop them. After while you'll get used to the tone and your playing will adapt to it.

I've found that when going between two different amps that I had (one of which I found out had problems later on, but anyway), going back to one made it sound ice picky initially, and then I got used to it. Fast forward to when I got back to the other amp, and it sounded dull, until I got used to the sound again.

The only way you can help is to stop doing it, its as simple as that.

part of that could be ear fatigue. especially going to a really bright amp - if you just kinda put up with it being unpleasant for a while, your ears will fatigue and you temporarily have weakened response to those higher frequencies.

i think... i'm not sure if i have my facts all straight. but i think that's how i remember it
