ENGL Screamer owners and people who have used them...

I'm thinking about selling my 6505+ Halfstack and getting an ENGL Screamer 1x12 combo. The reason I'm thinking of getting one is because I'm not playing in bands right now, and I can't crank my 6505+ in my apartment.

So...How versatile is the Screamer? Can it do comparable high-gain tones to a 6505+? I'm pretty sure 50w is more than enough for me, so please, tell me what you guys think!

50W will still be too loud for the apartment, but you tried

3 cheers for free gear!

The thing is, I don't want to spend $300+ on an attenuator. I bought this thing called the omnisonic volume box, which kinda acts like another volume, and I use it on my amp but still, I wish for more versatility.

Really, I think I'll be one of those guitarists that play and record stuff, but don't play shows very much, although I've had my share of playing on shows.

Anyway, back to the topic...

There's not much people here with that amp.

I just ordered a Blackheart halfstack, but I'm considering grabbing the ENGL also. I don't wanna deal with a shitload of gear, and also I love line 6, but for recording purposes. I have had their entire POD line, and some spiders and flextones, but I prefer the way tubes sound. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Those volume boxes are gay. They are nothing more than a volume knob with a capacitor to compensate for treble loss. It will not let you wind up your amp any harder than you can by cranking the master volume and keeping the pre low.

An attenuator really is a great suggestion as they do everything that volume box claims to do. If you dig the tone of your amp keep it and get a good attenuator

On the other hand I'm an Engl fanboy but I've never played a screamer so I can't tell you if it pWnS or not.

I was watching some videos on youtube, and it seems like a good, fucking versatile amp. The distortion sounds nice too for metal. But I'm just wondering what the actual owners, or people who have tried the amp can tell me about it, because I don't have an ENGL dealer anywhere near, and this will be buying without trying.

The Screamer is a really good and versatile amp, it can do anything you like honestly. I wanted one for a time but it's VERY loud, in an apartment you'll surely kill your neighbors past 1 on the volume. I use a 20w head in my apartment and never go past 1.5 on the volume.

astrocreep is a jewel in the rough
I've got the screamer combo.

It's fairly loud, the channel volumes on mine are never particularly high.

It's got a nice range of tones, not perhaps the brutal distortion of a 5150 with 4x12 (I've only played through that set up a couple of times) but with a much bigger range and a fairly nice clean.

I'm tempted to buy an attenuator to be honest, it would benefit from being cranked just that little bit more!

I recently got a TS7 to bung in front of it and I'm still experimenting with it... the idea was to tighten things up as people have recommended but I've noticed it being great on the clean channel with a fair bit of gain on the pedal for that SRV neck/middle sound.

I've got a couple of dodgy demo recordings of the amp and if I'm feeling less self concious about my playing/writing later I'll bung them up somewhere.
