Mesa Roadster set-up and tech questions

I might be trying out of a Maiden cover band soon so I am having to give my set-up a little more attention.

Currently - Gibson V (Mahogony) with Custom5/Jazz pick-ups, a Mesa roadster, and a Peavey cab with 85w celestions (i think.... Mike? You know my cab more than I do... ), tubescreamer

Before all this, i did the norm...
ch1 - clean
ch2 - bluesy clean
ch3 - orange for classic metal, hard rock
ch4- red for modern metal (with moderate gain)

so for maiden, i'm thinking...
ch1 - clean
ch2 - bluesy clean
ch3 - orange and a little louder with a little verb for leads
ch4 - orange, rhythms

my problem is, when i put ch4 on orange, the volume and brightness just dissapeared. I expected it to be different... and that i'd have to tweak some knobs a little... but damn the tone was such a dramatic shift that it makes me feel like something is wrong with the amp. I know from these boards that rectos aren't made to have extreme knob settings... starting from 12 o'clock and tweak to taste is key. but with ch4 on orange, I'm really having to tweak the shit out of things. Is this normal?

I need to bring it to division rehearsal and let mike and dave play through it.... but damn i'm enjoying hauling my double kicks instead.
