I bought some black and red Dunlop XL Jazz III picks as well as some Dunlop Ultex Jazz III's and I have fallen in love with the Ultex Jazz III's, so much so that I think I'm going to sell the 20 XL Jazz III's that I have.

I also like the rubber grip Dava picks.

Someone get a move on and sell me your B7 or CST before I spend my money on something else I don't really want

IMO, the picks with the best tone overall are Clayton Black Jazz 1.90mm. They can be quite difficult to really shred with though, but the cleans are phenomenal, and riffing is a dream. I haven't tried any of the thinner versions so I'm not sure how much of the tone is from the material and how much is from the thickness and roundness of the tip. After that are the Tortex Jazz IIIs, 1.10mm. Very easy to shred with, sound great, although a little "sharper" on the attack, and definitely less suitable for fast riffing.

Ultex Jazz IIIs are also really fucking great, and would probably be my pick for riffing if not for the Clayton Black Jazz picks. They're stiff as hell.

See i think jazz picks are awesome but i have sausage fingers so they don't really work well for me.

Instead I usually either practice scales with a pick until its whittled down sufficiently or I round the edge off with an exacto knife.

I like mixing thicknesses for different attacks.

If I'm playing something more riff oriented that needs to be a little sharper ( and I don't cut the pick) I use Tortex 1.14mm. Good for riffage stuff like Lamb and Pantera, etc.

If I want a softer attack I use a rounded off Gator Grip 1.5. works good for me for melody line like In Flames or Opeth.

my mother.... she never loved me. She always says she wishes shes was a raped by someone else ~Borat

Jeebo can only hope to improve
Gator Grips and the Jazz sound great, I'll try those out soon. I used to use the sharp tortex too but I think they're lacking in the sound department. I used to use the Jazz III along time ago but I don't remember why I ditched them, maybe I'll try them out again. Glad to see a lot of people using heavier gauge picks, I think they sound better overall than the lower gauge picks

AARRGGHHH will become famous soon enough
I went through the process of trying out different picks again a few years back, the main ones I spent time playing where the 2mm mini stubby picks which were really comfortable but the tone was too rounded, then I used the small tear drop .88mm dunlops (tortex irc) and those were great, just stiff enough to be good for fast picking and a really nice sharp attack, but I also found with my heavy handed riffing I would go through them REALLY quickly, like I could use a fresh one and after say 40 mins or so of playing live with them and really digging in they would be almost to the point of being too worn. I ended up going back to the small red Jazz III dunlops, they last ages, feel pretty good and sound bright enough to have plenty of clarity and attack for all the applications I need them for, especially when they are just starting to get slightly worn at the tip you start getting a much more crisp, aggressive, paul gilberty sort of attack to them. To my ear at least.

I think I might have to go through the whole process again with some of the picks I didn't try much last time around, that sort of thing can never hurt and you might find a better solution
