Recommend me a useable head for $300CAD

Hey guys, this is just in the "hm, that'd be cool" phase right now, but:

so my brother is using my strat at home right now through my kustom. i dunno how much he's playing.

i'm going to give him this offer: i will buy him either his own (SX) strat, or I will buy a head so he can let the strat wail through a halfstack - the kustom is great for vintage tones, not much else.

i have a stock peavey triple X straight cab just sitting around - 16ohms mono i believe.

can someone recommend me a head in this price range? it really does not need to be fancy or tube or any of that, its just to let my bro rock out. i am thinking line 6 spider II used or something.

he may very well take the guitar, which is fine by me. hopefully i can talk my parents into chipping in..

3 cheers for free gear!

you could get an RH200 for that much, dunno if you really want that balls-to-the-walls metal tone for him though lol

I'll sell you/him my Flextone II combo for $300 It can't plug into a speaker cabinet, but it sounds great for home practice, and is plenty loud enough for jamming/small gigs should the situation come up. The only issues I ever had were with the headphone jack (it mutes the speaker, and it's a little sticky so sometimes the speaker doesn't come back on first try) and it shuts off if it overheats, which was only ever an issue on stage when I forgot to bring my small fan to cool it down (when I remembered the fan, I had 0 issues).

no speaker out?

the combo is an idea aaron, but

a) i'll be 7 hours away :P
b) there's a random 412 in my house, that'll probably get shipped to my buddy's all summer for when we jam hehe. and it'll dominate the little line 6 spider II halfstack that's there now

I don't mind the tone of those MG's - what do AVT's go for, does anyone know?

Why not get him an Epiphone Valve Jr. head?

if you grew up in a house with metal for the last 4 years, would YOU want just a VJ?

might as well not replace the Kustom - does the same thing

Spinedriver is a jewel in the rough
I'd personally recommend one of several Peavey heads that regularly pop up on ebay or local used shops for around $300.

-XXL
-Supreme (XL,Transtube or 160)
-Valveking (tube)

I know the XXL and Supreme XL are quite versatile. The XXL has 3 channels and 3 separate voicings for each one. Not to mention the swiches on the back for 'loose/med/tight' output and a couple of others. The XL has only 2 channels but still has 3 voicings each, as well as a few switches on the back for even more options. I used to own the XL and to some extent I still wish I had it, but now I use a Pod XTL and even though it can push 100 watts, it'd barely be loud enough for our jam space.
