Epi Valve Jr; Thoughts and Mods

so, i'm pretty positive that my next high-voltage device will be the Epiphone Valve Jr head. it's $129, 5w, and sounds surprising great for the price. now, while i love it's raw, rock'n roll sound, there's the nerd in me that can't wait to get inside it to dink around. anyone tried any of these mods?

i'm interested in doing the noise-reduction mods, as well as the power transformer swap, but the tone shaping mods... maybe i'll wait to see how the amp sits with me for a while.

Step 1: Buy it.

Step 2: Invite Eric and his Loomis of Mass Destruction over. He will also bring along the Blackjack.

Step 3: Piss off the new neighbors.

Step 4: Go discuss potential mods over yummy Mexican food.

Step 5: Go really piss off the neighbors.

Step 6: Sweet talk the local constable out of citing us.

Seems like a good plan to me.

I've read that the VJr. is electronically evolved a bit from the combo, and some of the mods people have done to reduce the noise have already been implemented at the factory.

That doesn't mean there isn't still room for improvement, but i just thought i'd point that out.

This is what I know as well. I have one of the first combos and its noisy, and I'm lazy.

I have one of the later heads and its very quiet. I modded the head with one of the kits that use to be on ebay. The standby switch and brightness modes are good, the rest don't do much for me.

Swapping the tubes works the best, I've heard swapping the transformers is good, but I see no need for it. I'm sure you could go crazy and do a lot...but instead I got a firefly pcb and am building it. If I'm going to mod something so much, I might as well just build a fresh little one

ahh, i was wondering about that. the head i played at GC wasn't as noisy as the mod-page-guy would have me believe.
