Can I improve my tone cheaply? (Line 6 content)

OK, so still weighing up the ENGL/Mesa/whatever route, but in the meantime, as a quick, cheapish fix...what can I do to improve the tone of my HD147/Marshall 1960A rig. I short, I want more tubeiness, if that makes sense...think the way tubes cut through a mix/the tone from a decent tube amp just feels...big? Right now, I'm using a pair of EMG'd ESP Ltd 6ers in E, mahogany neckthrus, and the 1960A is all stock. Some ideas I had include...

a) maybe some kind of sonic maximiser. Do these actually work? Will they add some balls to my sound.
b) new speakers? maybe a mix of, say, V30s and GT12-75s?
c) anything else? hit me guys...

Selling my Moser V (£500), ESP LTD H307 (£550) and Iron Maiden Strat(£900), check out the Guitars For Sale forum

I've actually had experience with like HD147/Maximizer thing and I think you'll like it. It does add some 3D quality and it makes the sound bigger..however a maximizer is a temporary fix. What you'd really want is a 10 band EQ, which is basically a maximizer and more. I would say this would also be the safest bet, as you don't know how new speakers, tube preamps, etc will effect the sound of the tube head you'll be buying. The 10 band is something that you'll always use with any amp, and it's also the cheaper solution. Save the speaker changes and all that for when you get your tube amp.

Thanks, sounds like good advice. Basically, I intend to upgrade everything eventually, but I reckon on waiting until either a) In The Ravens Name makes some substantial progress or b) I get the gig I'm due to audition for with a signed death metal band. Until then, I reckon on keeping the HD around, and trying some stuff that I can get used and sell on if I don't keep it when I upgrade.

dont spend more money on a bandaid solution if you're gonna be spending money on a new amp.

save your money. save up for the head you want. dont make any pitstops, it'll just cost you more in the long run, thus meaning you'll wait longer to get the amp you want.

start workin yer ass off

3 cheers for free gear!

...another good point. I've been tossing about the idea of selling the HD, the FBV shortboard, my EC400, M350 and Dean V, basically getting down to scratch, then buying something along the lines of a Ltd Mustaine, ENGL e530, TC Gmajor, Mesa 50/50 and that'd be that buuut...I kinda like my HD. It does a decent job...just needs a little helping hand. It's reliable, sounds...reasonably good, it's versatile and it doesn't take much transporting.

Any more?

BBE 362 NR Sonic Maximiser + Noise Reduction on eBay, also Signal Processors, Outboards Effects, Pro Audio Equipment, Musical Instruments (end time 18-Mar-08 00:58:41 GMT)

this maybe? I'm a bit of a noob to peripheral rack gear that doesn't constitute pre/power amps.

do you really think you'll be missing the HD once you get something better?

and IMO, dont sell your entire collection if you dont have to. you may (probably?) regret it.

like i sad, just start working like a mofo, doing whatever odd jobs you can to get paid. you'll get a new amp soon enough. sell the amp and the FS taht goes with it, AFTER you get a new amp. especially if you'll be buying on ebay - if you sell your head and somehow cant afford the one you were about to get.. i hope you have a practise amp .

yeah, that was the problem I had with one idea. Essentially, I was going to sell the HD/FBV and the 2 Ltds while we were using a rehersal space with gear available there, stick the money in my ISA with the rest of my savings and then use it+the interest I made to finance an awesome new rig. Only problem I saw was...what if I need an amp at short notice...Spider IIIs are ok for jamming new ideas, but once we turned up to run through the setlist...mush

the only way i got away with buying something after selling something was because my mom covered me on the last few hundred and would pay for it, then i paid her back (in the case of my LP. i've bought nearly every other guitar).

and as for the S3 at gig levels.. just dont turn it up that loud. let the PA do the work. and pray you have good monitors

keep what you have, buy what you really want, and then sell what you no longer need.

haha...I'd rather just not go near the S3...solid practice amp...below 2 on the output.

you're right I think, I'll soldier on with the HD until I can afford to blow a wad on a brutal rack
