Peavey Ultra 2x12?

Anyone ever got a chance to try one? I could snag only for cheap locally (+ - 400$). I love combos and this would be for home use only. I LOVE my XXL to death, but i miss some of the good 'ol tubes "grrr" sometimes. Also, please keep in mind that for me, Peavey is the perfect price vs quality ratio. This means that in any way, i won't get a VHT, Mesa and ENGL combo of some sort... I could afford, but i would feel awkward to have such an expensive set-up for leisure / home usage (i don't gig anymore).

Reviews are excellent on HM (and on the web in general):

They're the precursor to the XXX, and IMHO, a better sounding amp. I'm still not that fond of them, but the Ultra channel is less buzzy and more usable. The other two channels are basically the same.

If you like your XXL, then you'll probably love this.

Seriously consider changing out the speakers. It will affect the tone the most. Those peavey speakers are harshness...

I'd get rid of em. I had an Ultra 2x12 back in 2000 and it was ok....I have a head now with 2x12 legacy cab, and there is no comparison.

I really dig the old Ultra models, when ever people ask me for an afforadable head that sounds good thats what i recomend. As Noodles said, similar to the XXX but the ultra was voiced differently (and I think better as well.) Lord Belial has been using Ultras thier whole career if I am not mistaken and they have a pretty good sound for most of it being a stock 007 Elite (2 hum version) Ultra and marshall cabs.
