soldanos in my experience, are like marshalls, in that cranky cranky = tone.
at least thats how the decatone and slo have responded at the shop here

tell them you want to crank it, and if you are more impressed you intend to possibly buy it right then. if you are impressed but still dont want it, tell em you arent impressed.

The problem there is, the shop is the other side of the country, and I just can't afford to take another 4 hour bus journey just to try it out, if it'll still be there at all, that is. I think it's more a case of, do I need it, rather than does it sound good. I'm sure it'll sound amazing when I get it home, so that's not much of a question. So, trying it out again won't help me.

If you hotrod the amp, I'll bet it'll sound great, but, you could get any amp to sound great with enough modification.

If this is a backup amp for you, you ought not to think too seriously about mod'ing it, though.

Soldano's are nice amplifiers. The one thing that always put me off was the price. At this point in my life, though, I would not buy one no matter how swell the price was for the two reasons that I don't need it and it takes up space.

If you bite on this one, the worst that could happen is that you turn around and sell it for about the price you paid for it, perhaps even make a little profit after shipping etc. You could always use the money to get your Vader cab, too.

It's really not a losing situation if you want to go for it. I'd just reiterate that if you have a beautiful Engl and don't have the desire for a Soldano tone, there isn't really a justifiable need for it.

What is your problem?!? Buy it! Those are voiced like the lead channel from the SLO, they're really awesome amps. It probably just needs a new set of tubes.

How happy are you with your Engl? Is there anything you don't like about it?

As you point out, you're not gigging, you're not recording, so there's really no sense in having two heads. It may be a goood price, but it's only a good price if you expect to get E785 in value out of using it. From the sound of it, you don't.

There's absolutely nothing about it I don't like. Killer rythm sound, possibly the best lead sounds I've ever heard, amazing cleans, and the low gain tones are gorgeous. To top it all off, it's all midi controlled.
