The only possible explanation other is that you weren't using it with a VHT cab, the tubes were shit, or you simply didn't know how to dial it in properly yet. Also of course, the amp reacts completely differently to different pickups so that could be a factor, but again... boomy? I've heard any VHT model come close to sounding that way ever.

I'm as big of a Mesa fan as any of you guys, but when I see remarks like that about the UL, it's just ridiculous. It's like when you hear people say Mesa's are [insert uninformed cliche here], and you know that's an issue with the end user and not the amp, and you respond to set the record straight. That's all I'm doing here. It's not about which amp is better.
Dude, calm down! You keep telling me what the amp sounds like, as if my opinion is completely wrong. I sat in Guitar Center, in the loud lounge, hooked up to the amp and matching speaker cab, with my fucking guitar, and I didn't really like it. I just don't like the character of the midrange, I felt the low end was overpowering, and I'm pretty sure I know how to dial in an amp. I could get some pretty good tones out of it, but the amp just didn't do it for me. I loved the CL, I thought it was one of the best hard rock amps I have ever played, but I just don't like the UL.

Yeah, I respond with my opinion about Mesa amps, offering suggestions on how to make them sound better, or disagreeing with someone's assessment. I never said it was about which amp is better, so you don't have to set the record straight on anything. You obvious think Mesas are inferior to VHT, or you'd be playing a Mesa instead. What, can't I bag on your amp a little without you getting offended?

I've been calm all along You make as if I'm offended or upset and I'm not. I'm just saying they're not boomy, and if you experienced that then something was wrong there. Bag on any amp you want, I'm merely responding to what is a very flukey observation that isn't consistent with what I know the amp to be like. It's no different than if someone told you they went to GC and played a Triple Rec and found the amp to be lacking in volume and bass response. You'd know better.

I'm all for differing opinions, I'm sure your observation is truthful, I'm just saying there had to be something wrong there... tubes, improper settings, severely under-biased, or something, because the amp is just so focused, clear and tight I've never heard anyone describing the bass as overwhelming or boomy.

No need to be a dick, he's stating his observations and trying to give advice on why you guys may not like the amp, which if I just dropped $2k on one, I'd be VERY interested in hearing.

EDIT: And yes, I know it wasn't YOU who dropped the money on one, but your friend/bandmate/whatever.

Edroz, if you don't like this thread don't post on it. How simple is that for you? You haven't added anything useful to the conversation.

And about the opinion vs. fact, sound clip vs. impression stuff, of course everyone needs to try something out before they buy it but the fact is you can't always. I couldn't. Most sound clips I've heard of amps sound the same over the internet, or they're doing chicken pickin through the amp whereas I would set the thing to decimation. And no one here accepts it when you say, "I heard Mesa over the internet and it is better than VHT". So I think it is useful for me to say that when I gave them a shootout in the rehearsal room at full volume the Triple Rec sounded like a monster coming out of your amp to eat your children when compared to the VHT. I do not work for Mesa or own stock in the company. It's a public service announcement from your pal.

I think it's better than those reviews about "crisp highs but not overbearing with a luscious mid-range growl and tight, focused lows". How's that supposed to be more factual or objective or informative than me saying Mesa sounded like Rocco Siffredi coming in for a backdoor invasion without spitting vs. the VHT as a well-lubed pinky exploring your pleasure hole ever so gently.

I was going to negrep you for being an asshole to Edroz but I actually like how you justified everything in that statement.

And that final simile is rather fantastic.

And since I already dropped the 2K, as I said, I will take the plunge with the VHT cabinet and new tubes. I never said it was not a good amp, for certain things. There are Electro-Harmonix KT88s and Tung Sol 12AX7s in it now. One of the problems I'm having though, for you fellow VHT owners who actually followed this to the bitter end, is the gain has to be set just right for the amp not to fart out with you hit a low power chord. Sound familiar, or is my amp f'd?

Thanks stitch.

sounds like you need to throw a boost up front. really badly. tighten up the low end. dont use it for more gain, but use it for the low end cut. most high gain tube amps need a little bit of help in that way
