Peavey xxx effects loop...

is the effects loop on these amps the same as the one on the JSX where you can patch it, crank the level and use it as a boost? if so, does it sound good when you do this, like it does with the JSX?

I know it has effects levels for the loop, my other guitarist in the band has one, so I don't have a ton of experience. If you patch it and crank the levels, I think it would just make the amp run at full like a full 120watts, not so much a boost, an EQ in the loop however..

Oh, and one day I ran my Maxon OD808 in front of it, and damn sounded great!

not much boost? psst. josh. it is a huge boost. :P

if you dime the fx loop you get more volume as well as a thicker, warmer tone. i leave my loop on all the time.

3 cheers for free gear!

oh my jesus------ the efx loop is as follows------the button pressed ~in~ for the effex makes the sound louder in every diection ~if the amp is set to 100~ loose------if unpressed `the amp is in safe condition never to be overpurged with sound.with the effex loop used with an actual effect pedal such as the boss cr-20 loop station-------youd feel the maximus drive it can give/the pedal gaining a lil bit of steering sound to juice things up.....-------might sound mighty beefy with a sonic maximizer back there too!--------very good additive that makes this xxl so damn great!-------my advice to go even further with this head is to grab a isp -----g-string to stop any head hum wich is a lil flaw in the design of the xxl.then your talking sweet sounds!!!!!

Ahh, my bad, I thought it just boosted the overall volume, not a tubescreamer like boost, my bad. I don't has effects levels on the 5150, so I was shooting in the dark! haha.

i wouldnt call it a tubescreamer like boost, more like volume boost and since it lets the power amp open up completely it's warmer.

s'all good dude

sepherus is just really nicesepherus is just really nice
yeah, my trip X gets a really good volume differentiation if i put the effects loop full on with both pre and post knobs maxed and use it as a lead boost. it just kicks the power amp harder is all. so basically its like turning the master up on a preamp on a rack unit. dont even need a patch cable. trying it with a maximizer or a nice EQ miight be fun too.

it's not like turning up the preamp though.. that would not make the sound more full and warm.

you let the power amp open up is what diming the fx loop does. hence power amp saturation is classic rock and smooth and warm, and preamp distortion is dual rec etc.

when i turn the loop off, and turn up the channel volume i get more crunch. when i turn the loop on, i get a volume boost as well as more warmth.

i loves m'tube warmth

awesome thanks guys!!! my good friend has a xxx and he was talkin to me the other night about his tone. he was sayin how he loved his amp and the way it sounded but he just wanted to bring some more life out of it. i told him for one he needed to replace the stock speakers in his cab(peavey classic 412) or replace the cab with a vader and also suggested the effects loop boost thing, so i was just makin sure i didnt give him some bunk advice haha.

he doesnt NEED a vader.. they're just handy

1. buy 4 USED WGS British Leads. easy install.
2. BOOST with a JoBo TS7ovChaos/SD-1ovChaos/Bloody murder
3. how old are his tubes? i think XXX's are good for EL34's and 6L6's.. so i'd put in KT77's from Eurotubes

he's lookin at around $150 for speakers maybe, $85 for the TSovChaos, $120 for the retube kit.. and a new amp tonewise lol
