How to tune amp?

i have a crate 15 watt amp that i would like to get a better sound out of. I basically only play metal so how can i tune my amp to get a nice deep/distorted sound? Any advice would be very helpful thanks.

i had that amp, or i still do, but what i did is bought a digitech distortion pedal. and it sounded good, until i got a multi effect pedal, your best bet is getting a multi effects processor.

First :
Second : just by something else than a Crate and you should be just fine!

No kidding and generally speaking, Crate amps don't have a great rep.
I you want to keep it, you might want to put an overdrive or Tube Screamer pedal up front. That's an easy way to "ameliorate" / change the tone on your amp.

multi fx is gonna be your best bet. youre not going to get anything amazing out of it, unfortunately, but you can get some decent stuff to live with if you really try

hes right though about crates. make due, clearly, dont just give up on the thing, but try and save up like 400 bucks and pick up a mesa combo on ebay, youll be happy you did.

Well somebody had to say it!

Anyway.. I think you will be best of with a multi fx pedal or a Pod

Feel Enjoy!

a simple tube amp, combo or half stack, is a nice solution... doesen´t need to be tube though, if you find a solid state amp that sounds nice, go for that :P

i´m not too good at amp selection, having owned one guitar amp ever :P

marshall is a step up, but if you´re going to go up a step, you´d do better in stepping it up a little higher... a marshall tube amp, like a dsl100, or tsl or whatever with an overdrive pedal in the front, maybe. that engl single channel amp head smokes, from what i´ve heard...

1. VJ's arent good for metal - i've tried.
2. he doesnt need a halfstack.
3. multi-effect is your best bet right now.

see if you can score a used Boss GT-6 or line 6 POD 2.0 for a good price ($150). using headphones will get you a better sound then your crate. the amp you have now is a practise amp - it wasnt designed to have jaw-dropping tone, as its not meant to be used as a gigging amp. sometimes people get frustrated trying to get an amp to do something it was never meant to do.

3 cheers for free gear!

Look for a GNX3 on Ebay, you can usually find one for under $200 and that will give you plenty to play with, and most Crate's clean channels are pretty transparent so that would probably work great for practice as well.

I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ
