Which ENGL?

Well since the HD147 sounds either like absolute shit or just doesn't quite get there in terms of tone, it'll be replaced if I can't get it dialed in. So I'm probably gonna try to trade it in at a shop against something else. I could probably trade it against something worth about 900-1000€ with the FCB1010 included. Currently I've got three candidates, the ENGL Fireball (E625), Powerball (E645) and Blackmore (E650).

The amp will be used mostly for (progressive) metal. Apart from my own stuff, it would be used mainly for Nevermore, Dream Theater, Stam1na stuff. I should be able to test the Powerball, Screamer (head and combo), Thunder (combo) and either the Fireball or Blackmore.
I'm not sure if I will be able to test the Fireball or Blackmore because the store doesn't have 'em, but should be able to order them from another shop (too far away for me to go and test). And it would probably require that I bought the amp that would be ordered or the Powerball in order for them to get something out of it.

So to get to the point, which one would you recommend, the Fireball or the Blackmore? Just so that I know which one should be requested for testing. Tones that I like can be found on for example: This Godless Endeavor, Scenes From A Memory and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

PS.
MrJack confesses that he doesn't know what the hell he was thinking when he decided to get the HD147.

i've heard good things about the Blackmore, but never tried either of those two particular models myself. i love my Savage 120 though not a big fan of the Powerball, though.

I actually liked the tone Joop Wolters got from the Fireball (starts 1 minute into the video).

I think Blackmore will be the best for your needs, I played one (my friend has it) and it's excellent amp imo.

But if you like DT tones buy Mesa

The best way to find the amp you're looking for is to go and try out amps. that's the best advice I can give you.

That is what I'm planning on doing, I just need to know if I should request the Fireball or Blackmore to be ordered so that I can test it, as I doubt they'll order both if they're not sure they can get them sold.

So it's leaning towards the Blackmore now

Not happening with the prices they go at here.
The cheapest Mesa/Boogie head is the Single Rectifier and that costs about 2000€.

get them to order both, or you wont know what each has to offer.

also, dont trade in your gear. sell it, you will get what it's worth, not what a store is willing to pay you.

3 cheers for free gear!

haven't played the blackmore yet, but after comparing the powerball and the fireball i clearly prefer the fireball. More character, less compression and the overall sound is more raw.

I think the blackmore won't sound as modern as the fireball, which may be a good or a bad thing...

listen to scar symmetry's pitch black process: ->Engl fireball
