He was using my JSX for a little while before this new head he has and he doesn't even seem to think there's any difference between those amps. He's totally stuck on this "This Line 6 rawks!" thing. Besides, I run my guitar through both amp heads so I can't give him one
i never called it pro, you did. i said it was a good amp. i've played an XXL, it sounds good. might not sound as full as my JSX, but does a damn good enough job. im sure if i recorded one, you'd try to tell me it was something else :P.

you could always run just one head *gasp*. either way, sounds like you're set on being a tube snob and he's set on loving line 6.. i suggest just agreeing to disagree.

if he cant hear the difference between a jsx and a HD.. then why WOULD he spend his money on a tube amp? if he cant hear why he's paying more.. then he's smart to not pay more just because someone else thinks its a great idea.

and if your jsx is set up all fugly, i can see why he thinks his line 6 sounds the same :P (just buggin yeh - what are your jsx settings?)

3 cheers for free gear!

I dunno man. You kinda sound like a hard headed asshole as well

Well, taking off the cab model helped..but it still doesn't have that "leap from the cabinet" type thing going on. Maybe a new cab will do it, but I keep feeling like it doesn't have enough to push air.

Honestly I'd like to think it's just me. He's not getting drowned out, nor do I try to drown him out. This isn't an "Volume dick measuring" contest. There are things I've noticed about his amp that just seem wrong, so I'm asking those who have experience with the amp if maybe I'm setting up the head wrong. He can play a dead monkey hooked into an electrical socket if he wants to, but judging by what he's describing he wants (which he still doesn't have yet, even to him) I'm not hearing it from this amp. My goal is to correct whatever I'm screwing up and make it work, not usher him into tube world. You don't need a tube amp to have a good tone, however it could very well be that I'm used to certain aspects of tubes that I'm expecting from this amp.

It doesn't have to be a tube amp at all. I even hear the Vetta does better with tone and power than the 146HD. My problem is that if he spent his money, he should get an amp that has a good chest pound, air moving factor, ample volume and power and I don't feel he's getting that. I WILL say the amp, when worked with, is a lot better than I thought, and I found a tone I think he'll love and it would be killer...IF it had some power to it. If he can take that 700 (He had a lot more saved but I helped him find a cheaper 146HD since he wanted one) and buy something better then why not?

unless there's something wrong with it, i can't understand there being a power issue with the HD147, it's 300 watts IIRC. it's more or less a stripped down Vetta. i used the the Vetta II for a short time and power or volume was never an issue with it, it was going against a Brunetti XLII R-Evo!

does it have a half power function like the Vetta?

I was wondering that, but no it doesn't. This leads me to believe that I'm doing something wrong, which oddly makes me feel a bit better. After messing with it I coaxed a really nice clean channel, a really "br00tal" rhythm channel, a lead channel that's great, and the 4th he can set himself, the first 3 are just my sound ideas. We're saving all the settings and naming them so if he wants to change them or use something else, he can go back to anything we've already covered. The only problem left is the power thing, I'm sure if I spend more time with it I can probably get that too. I do appreciate everyone's input by the way (even the people calling me an asshole )

yeah man, the best thing to do is just take your time and go through every parameter you can possibly tweak. it took awhile for me to dial in any useable tones on my Vetta II.
i'm definietly a tube guy and will choose that over digital modelers and day of the week, but there are some good sounds to be had from them if you're patient.

I say if ya don't get the sound power issue sorted, I would try and get him to at least try out a 5150 or something. I have never heard tube and ss amps blended in the same band and sound good

The ss always sounds too thin and weak
