Messin with solid state

I've got a nice tube rig, but I'm thinking about experimenting with some solid state stuff for death metal. A lot of my favorite death metal stuff was recorded using solid state stuff from Crate and Ampeg. I haven't compared it directly but just from memory, I like the guitar tone on The Bleeding better than Kill, for example.

So, I'm thinking about getting a Crate Powerblock and a GT8 and an Uber Metal pedal and seeing what it sounds like through my buddy's Vader. The one thing I hate about solid state amps is that high end static that seems to cause instant tinnitus. But I'm thinking the Vader might help rectify that problem.

What do you all think? By the way, my other guitarist has a dual rectifier so it could be a lost cause.

Put a sonic maximizer in the effects loop (or out front) and it'll slay.

TheMissing's GAScon status: GAScon 4... I'm doing pretty good at the moment.

do yourself a favor and lose the uber metal. worst pile of garbage since the metal zone.
If you're thinking of going solid state, try rocktron. the prophesy is an amasing piece of work for being mostly solid state, it has one 12ax7 in it. its nice, chameleons are decent as well and cheap!

the GT8 will have enough distortion models that you probably won't need any other type of distortion pedal. and, if even you don't like the loud sounds of the GT8, you can use it with headphones to great success.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

get whatever marshall SS amp it is that was used a bit in the 90's for metal albums, dont bother with pedals etc.

and then go back to your tube rig and compare.

3 cheers for free gear!

I've actually had a couple of Rocktron preamps and didn't care for them. I hated the Chameleon even after trying settings posted by others. I've never tried the Prophesy though. Thanks for the tip on the Uber Metal.

Yeah, with the GT8, at least I can use it for effects with my rig and recording if I want.

you're probably talking about the Valvestate VS8100
also the other good SS amps (for metal at least) are the Ampeg VH and SS series, Crate GX130C and VTX series, and most of the Randall stuff. the Ampegs and Crates I mentioned have very similar preamps. also, the Ampeg VH series stuff sounds RIDICULOUS for death metal (in a good way) through a Vader 4x12. they also take well to running a Tube Screamer in front as a clean boost, with the amp's gain turned down a bit (although, the VH can do metal without a boost with the gain at 10 o'clock )
