Tone/amp terminology

i find it had sometimes to follow other people's descriptions on tone, as many (including me) sometimes describe an amps sounds using words that may be misleading for others. Take 'djent' for example. There was a thread about it's meaning not long ago, and people already started discussing on their take on the meaning. The same applies to most words we use to describe an amps or a pickups tone. While some people may know exactly what 'raw' or 'smooth' sounding is, others could find it misleading. Describing sound is not easy, but tone discussions would definitely be more productive if using a common terminology.
Therefore, i decided to start this thread about amp/tone terminology. Mainly because i'm bored and constantly trying to keep myself from working on my thesis...

i'll start with djent, and hope you guys contribute some more stuff:

Djent:

sharp and metallic-sounding palm-muted sound. Best achieved with a tubescreamer in front of an amp at moderate/high gain and a strong and good picking and muting technique. (clip taken from meshuggah's destroy erase improve - sublevels)

clip: djent

i'm not an expert on this, so i'll appreciate any feedback and comments...

i'll just started with 'djent' and hope that if you guys are interested in this may add more examples i could then paste here...

(ps: how the fuck do i embed!?!? i tried with HTML lines but only gibberish appears )

FS: Brand new set of EMG808's. Still unpacked!

I think the best way to really understand the terms people use to describe tones is to play an amp that gives you those tones. I probably wouldnt really understand what an "open" sounding distortion is if i didnt have my jsx (traynor YCV80 212 combo before). but since i can go from an open, more raw sounding crunch channel to a tight and well-defined (i try to make sure it never sounds solidstate lol) ultra channel on my jsx, i understand what people mean when they say tight distortion, or an amp sounds open.

i dunno if that made much sense.. work on your thesis!

3 cheers for free gear!

it's for your own good!

i say that as a college student who's been up since 5 and doesnt have class till 8 lol.

my english class is going to be a serious affair this semester.. ah well, the prof is cool lol. not as cool as the last one though.. cuz he let us talk all class, put up everything online, and it was generally easy.

im curious - does anyone else think i have a point with my "its good if you hear an amp with the tonal quality you're trying to describe in order to understand what that word means tonally" thing?

wow that sentence lost me. its too early in the AM for this shit..
