New amp or Pod XT Live?

Here's the situation:

I have a Fender Princeton Chorus combo amp which actually sounds pretty good. The clean sound is very good, but the "high gain" (which is not so high gain) leaves something to be desired. I am not in a band right now, but I will probably be back in a band at some point in the not-too-distant future. I have about $400 saved up and I am trying to decide whether or not I should keep saving, or buy an amp modeler / effects unit like the Pod XT Live or Boss GT-8.

I do a good amount of home recording into the computer so the XT Live would work well for that, but would it still sound good plugged into my Fender amp? Otherwise I am faced with saving much more $$ to buy a Mesa/other high-gain amp. Obviously it would be nice to have both.

So what do you think I should do: spend the money on an XT Live or keep saving and buy a nice amp? The stores around me have a $100 off $400 sale every once in a while where I could get the XT Live for $300. Mesa combos like the Nomad/F-30/F-50 seem to usually go for at least $600, if not MUCH more. Thoughts?

I have a Mesa dual rec stack that I play in band situations, and a Line6 flextone 3 at my home, which I run directly into my cpu for recording...

I'm at the point right now that I'm considering selling the Line6 and getting a small tube combo for my home, even if it means shoving it in the closet to crank it up for recording...

I can get tons of usable tone out of the Line6, but as soon as I turn on the Mesa, I wonder why I even bought it

I just tried out the Vox Tonelab SE at a local store. It sounded pretty good, although the upgradeability of the Line6 products appeals to me. I also tried out the Genz Benz El Diablo 60C which sounded good. Not $1000 good, but if I can find it on Ebay for less....

Needless to say, this question has not been answered for me. It does seem though, that the "real" tone from the amp cannot be emulated by outboard effects.

I need to try the Pod XT Live and the Boss GT-8. Can the GT-8 be upgraded with new patches and firmware etc? Anyone own one of these?

Yes I own one. It can be upgraded with firmware and with patches (obviously). I'll say, it's an amazing unit. It has all the effects one could ever really need and it's of a great build, and sound, quality - very strong. There's also now a computer editor out for it by a programmer on the Bossgtcentral.com website who goes by the name of Mr. Sleepy. I downloaded it and it's a Godsend. Now I have my GT-8 hooked up via midi to my PC so I don't have to program it hunched over it causing my back to ache. I now program it on my PC Well, I recommend the GT-8 highly.
