How open ended can you get? Thats like saying "whats the guitar I could buy?" or "Where should I live" or "whats the best food to eat"

It totally depends on the circumstanes.

Three options - Ernie Ball Volume Pedal (pricy, good)
Jim Dunlop Volume Pedal (Pricy, good)
Cheapo volume pedal (not pricy, not so good - balanced out by the cost?)

Why don't you give us a bit more information?

another good option, not quite as nice but almost as good as a ernie ball, is the morley little alligator. its optic, much like vai's signature wah the bad horsey. this is his signature volume.
the one thing thats nice about it, you dont have to have one for active pickups and one for passives

I've always liked the fact that Morley's pedals are optical and don't have pots that get worn out and/or scratchy. Hell, on the Ernie Ball pedals, the pedal itself is attached to the pot using a STRING! A lot of people swear by Ernie ball pedals, but that design "feature" alone makes me not want to consider them.

lol my life is pretty fucked up so my coping mechanism = fucking around with whatever gear i can get my hands on.

the ernie ball works really well actually. i was unaware of the string issue. cheap to fix though lol
yeah i like the optics, if you arent concerned with an all analog signal path

Pots and wire are also "all analog".

I have a couple of these I use for expression pedals as well as old fashioned analog volume pedals. Very solid and you can adjust tension and low end (how low the volume goes, incase you don't want to go off)

Buy Boss FV-500H Mono Volume Pedal online at Musician's Friend
