Brand, tone differences for 6l6 and 12AX7s, opinions please?

I posted this earlier, but realized the title was confusing. I would like to switch from stock tubes and would like some suggestions, or tone difference explanations. I use clean as much as dirty, i guess i try to cop the jazz/metal thing sometimes. The only 6l6 alternative I've heard of are Rubys, but I haven't done much research, and am willing to pay money for good ones. I'm selling my dual rec, so I'm not sure what I'll be using in the future, but if anybody could list there current setup it could give me some ideas... Thanks

6L6 alternatives wouldnt be a brand, they would be the tube type.

if you want a list of tubes and their differences, go to Eurotubes and i think it's under FAQ. KT77's are great for me, some like EL34's, some like 6L6's, some like KT88's...

i vote JJ 6L6's.

3 cheers for free gear!

JJ 6l6s are great.

But if you're selling your amp why are you looking at new tubes anyways?

What amp are you thinking of getting? A dual rec will do metal/jazz if equed properly. Throw an OD in front of the gain channels and you have instant tight, amazing metal tones. turn it on clean and you have a bluesy crunch (OD still engaged). The cleans on the dual were adequate and with the right picking style/pickups, jazz is easy to achieve. My Godin sounded lovely through my old Dual rec (well my Old godin too...i'm such a gear whore )

Really explore the Eurotubes site. THere's LOADS of info on there and they've been rather helpful for me answering about a million questions that I had for them yesterday and today. There's even a section that compares JJ tubes with some other brands based on the type of tube. I think it's the How Does JJ Compare button....

I am the mask you wear.

Because I'm going to switch the stocks right away for something more specific. And if different amps react differently to different tubes (blge mouthful) then I'd like to know how it will affect the tone after I change them. I'm not satisfied with the clean on the dual, I'm thinking maybe mark IV if i can afford, not sure about $$$ though.

For what you're talking about, a Nomad may be up your alley. A Nomad 100 with the graphic EQ is a SICK amp.

i had one and sold it before I learned the 'art' of an OD pedal. I might still have it if I knew better

yes, there are different brands. 6L6 and 12AX7 are tube TYPES (power amp and preamp respectively), and Ruby tubes and Groove Tubes are Brands.
