A Few Mesa 2:90 Questions
Hey guys.
I've been jamming with my Mesa Studio/2:90 setup and figured I want to try out the poweramp voicings. I've connected a footswitch to them, but I doesn't seem to work. Do I need a specific Pedal to switch the voicings on and off??? Also I try to use the same footswitch to switch channels on my Studio Pre. Nothing seems to work. When I use it with my friend's amp, it switches perfectly. Another thing I would like to know is if the 2:90 can be run in Mono. I would like to have one volume knob. Is there a way I could do this without damaging anything? |

I made dummy jacks to a\b the voicings by taking a 1/4 connector and shorting the hot and ground terminals togeather. Then you can just plug it in the Deep\Modern jack on the 2:90 to turn it on or off... I didnt care for the Deep voicing (it sucked) so I had it always bypassed with that jack I made.
The 2:90 can not be ran in mono you can just use one side of the amp and leave the other side in standby but I wouldnt recommed it because you can accidentally flip the wrong standby and damage your amp because of the lack of a speaker load.

Actually the mesa has only one standby and one power switch. I believe just plugging in one side is fine, just turn the volume down on the other. Makes for a good backup in case one side blows.
For the switching, a footswitch won't work unless it is a latch type one i believe. Just do the shorted out jack thing, take a jack and solder it together, and old cheap jack from a screwed cable will do. Good way to experiment. I found that deep is only usable for clean sounds and possibly for lead for beefing up the low end. Half power, well, it's still fucking loud whatever you do.... Modern I found to sound great, but actually got better results with it off, more organic in a way, as the modern seems to really boost the presence and the high end while tightening up the low end a bit. |

If you are using a Momentary footswitch the circuit is completed only when you push the button down but breaks the circuit as soon as your lift your foot off the button. The "latch" switch is a switch that keeps the circuit on when pressed once then breaks the circuit when you press it again.
oh yea I forgot the 2:90 has only 1 standby. The 295 has 2(I've owned both amps). So I would definatley have a speaker load connected to it. If you have a stereo cab just run 2 cables into it. You have to have a speaker load connected once that standby switch gets flipped. |

Look up the manual on Mesa's website. IIRC, you turn the 2nd channel's volume all the way down, and the presence all the way up.

This is what the manual for my 50/50 says to do. Turn the volume to 0 on the channel you aren't using

My 2:90 even if the channel volume was turned all the way down you could still hear sound coming out of the speaker cab. I dunno man I wouldn't chance it but its your gear.

It's absolutely fine to run just one side of the 2:90. As the manual says, just turn the unused channel down.
And also as suggested, you need to make some shorted jackplugs to permanently switch the voicings. I only ever use modern, the rest are left un-switched. 'Excuse me while I adjust my pants, and dance the good time dance'![]() |
