MESA Mark IV vs. ENGL Invader
Living in Hawaii, I unfortunately am not able to test drive the ENGL Invader. (No one carrys it on the island.)
So I figured I'd ask the great people of this forum. I currently own a MESA Mark IV. What can I expect from an ENGL Invader, comparatively?? "Good tattoos ain't cheap/Cheap tattoos ain't good." |

Considering that the Invader is several thousand dollars more expensive, I'm guessing... quite a bit.

Going on the sounds Bulb was getting from an Invader, it is definitely closer to a Recto than a Mark IV. More bottom end and sizzle, while the Mark IV has more of a bark to the midrange and a woolier bottom.

Yeah, it depends what you want. If djent is your thing, then the Engl will be tough to beat. If you're looking for lead tones or more Metallica like crunch, though, well, the Mark-IV is about the best lead tone I've ever heard.

Most versatile amp I've ever touched!!! Me thinks it could pull off a good Mark IV lead tone with some tweakage AND you still have the benefit of it being a rhythm monster which, IMO, the Mark IV is not. |

I don't know Joe, your TS-9 has made my Mark IV a freakin' beast! I was messing with R2 this week and got a setting that, to my ears at least, sounded quite like an overdriven recto. F***ing ballsy. I know the 15" Peavey bass cab isn't hurting it either...
I did almost pick up an ENGL the day I bought the Mark IV, but I had been wanting the Mesa for so long that I would not be denied. For bulb tone, which flat out owns btw, ENGL. Period. |

Yeah, the Invader ain't just for rythms, everything I've read about it says the leads absolutely slay, and that's one of the reasons I was going for it, I want some more versatility.
There's just not that many lead clips out there, most people are doing rythms clips. This might give you an idea: I'll be able to tell you more once I actually have it in my hands, but the guys here have said that there's some awesome low gain and mid gain sounds, and that all the channels are really usable. Well, OK, a new Invader 100 is $2700, a used Mark IV right around $800. I've never seen a used Invader so I don't know how much they go for.

No shit I paid $1450 for mine. I paid too much, but it was the cheapest one at the time.

Craigslist and eBay? I've seen two or three in the past six months or so go for under $900.

I have the Mark IV for almost a year now. It is extremely versatile. Anyone who says it can't do metal or isn't aggresive needs to climb out of that rock they're living under. Amazing clean and lead channel. Perfect for rhythm and lead players. Can dial in a Black Album/Justice type tone pretty easy if you have expierence with it. Haven't tried the Invader yet but the ENGL's I did try have a little bit "too much saturated distortion type tones" for me but I'm not saying they're bad, they have some pretty cool tones. Mark IV fits me perfectly because it is an extremely tight and smooth amp. I really recommend you try it out for yourself. Also be warned that this is a tweakers amp, if your a plug in and play kinda guy it'll take some patience to find that exact tone your looking for but it's definately worth it.

haha from what I've been hearing of the Invader 100 I really wanna try one! I usually go to Sam Ash to try out major amps but I guess I'll try to make the extra drive to get a guitar center. If I could score one for around $2000 used that'd be great for me, fo some reason I really don't want to spend more than $2000 on my first tube amp.
