Engl e530?

has anyone here ever heard or used this? i'm thinking about getting an external preamp to add to my setup so i can have a nice rock tone, and a heavy metal tone.
i'm wondering if theres possibly any other better/ heavier preamps in this price range. i'm looking for something about $500 and under, new or used. i'm really looking for the heaviest amp possible.

i'll update more about my gear later, if necessary.

surely a new member could get some help?

ok, for now i'm planning on running this through my marshall 3203 artist. i think i should be able to just run it through the effects loop? I like my marshall, great lead channel, but not really suited for metal. I'm looking at getting a pre-amp because of the obvious reason that they're cheaper than a full head. Since this preamp has a bypass, i figure i could be able to A/B between the engl pre, and the marshall? Use the marshall for the moderate stuff, and kick on the Engl for the heavy stuff. Now, i know you really should get a dedicated poweramp to go with a pre, but does it really make that much a difference? i'm just playing in my basement for now, so as long as it sounds decent i'll be happy. Also, the 3203 sounds pretty good, and it only has a tube power and solid pre, so i'm assuming its the power section of the amp that's good.

thoughts?

what about the digitech 2021 artist? might also be a good deal, and i know there was a thread on it not too long ago.

3 cheers for free gear!

i've heard the engl is heavier with much more gain on tap, which is what i'm looking for. i'm looking for something pretty different from my marshall, and heavy as hell.

I've been using this preamp as my main for a while now, and I like it quite a bit, some people don't think it has enough gain, I think those people are

Well one of the things I've heard is that the huge rack setups with tons of shit are massive pains in the ass to move around when you go gigging. Which is why one of the mods (Drew? noodles?) sold his.

well i don't have a rack at all. i don't necessarily want a rack setup, but i can't afford a new amp, so i figured just throwing a pre on top of my stack would be a nice change. slinger, what other amps do you have, if any? it'd be real nice if i could hear a comparison between this and something else, from the same person through the same setup.
