Tube life - Engl problems, again.

So can someone tell me what it is reasonable to expect out of a set of valves on a brand new amp?

After the month long nightmare that was my last amp the shop agreed to replace my Engl head with a brand new amp. (I went for the combo this time).

It's just started squeeling like a bitch, even on the clean channel.

*sigh*

Guess I'd best get ready for more arguing with the shop about it.

That high-pitched noise you're talking about sounds like a bad preamp tube. Easy fix. Take it back to the shop since they just gave you a new one, let them see that it's having issues with the tube and then have them replace the preamp tube in question.

Check the amp with a few guitars, it may actually be microphonic pickups. Tube life should be in the region of 6months (very very very very very heavy use and driving the amp hard with a hot bias) to 2-3 years.

...or as above, a bad preamp tube. swap each one out in turn at the shop and see if it helps

call Jeff at house of engl amps in chicago, he'll help. My powerball survived for 2 years with the tubes that came with it under very heavy use. I just retubed it with JJ and never happier. good luck, don't get discouraged with ENGL, they'll help you out, and no that is not a normal thing, you're the first I've heard of.
