Lankles is a jewel in the rough
Orange Cab Question and Engl head Question

ORANGE

Around here Orange cabs retail for about 1500 AUD for the V30 loaded 412, and about 1900 AUD for the G12K-100 loaded 412. Cheaper than Mesa cabs at 2250AUD. Avatar and Vader are virtually non-existent in Brisbane.

Which one? I will be plugging my Loomis into my Thunder 50 into the cab. There is only a noise gate in my effects loop.
The only other concern I have is the fact that I am tempted to buy some kind of high power (~300w) hybrid or modeller head/rack as a backup/alternative for when the thunder is being retubed or perhaps for certain recording necessities and this may be too much for the 240w cab (Particularly at 16 Ohms). The thunder will likely be retubed a lot, running at full blast as I do, and I find that even only 50 watts is too much for bedroom volume to hit half decent levels of saturation, a problem avoided with modelling gear and its tendency for headphone jacks and line-out ports.

My band won't have any gigs without backline cabs for a while, so the extra couple of weeks waiting to afford the high power version is a non issue.

------------------------------

ENGL

My Thunder 50 is really quiet. I have mine on 10 at practice and the other guitarist has his Thunder 50 on about 6 and his is probably still about 20% louder (though his is admittedly peaked at 6). I've had mine a few months longer, and am becoming increasingly suspicious that it was floor stock. Is a retube all I need? I suppose I could get a tech to just give it a look over while it's getting new tubes. It's not broken or anything... just not as loud.

Much love to you tech wizards. I spent ages setting this out and I'm pretty sure I've delivered all the info I can.

does your ENGL have an fx loop that has send and return knobs? put the pedal out front (or turn it down? i dunno.. i dont use pedals lol) and dime the FX send and return - insta-boosts a JSX.

get the V30 loaded orange, a) its cheaper b) its the standard, im fairly sure. that said, try them both out and see which one you like more with your amp and guitar.

ya jerk. :P

3 cheers for free gear!

I would go for the V30 orange cab. The other one has a very high power handling and is intended for the Orange Thunderverb, so I don't think it is a good match for a not-ridiculously-overpowered tube head. Orange cabs are cheaper for you guys? Awesome! They are also better

Ta loktide, but that narrows it down from the 400w 412 or the 240w 412... to the 400w 412 or the 240w 412.

hehe...

back to topic: Well, it depends on what you want soundwise. The G12k100's can handle more power than V30s but both cabs will sound different. Nonetheless, a 240W V30 cab won't breakup unless you plan playing bassguitar with a 300W+ amp through it. Line 6 amps have a 300W power rating for STEREO operation, btw. So it's actually 2x150W mono.

Line 6 = digital which is not the same as running a tube amp. I had the HD147 head and that thing was NOWHERE near as loud as my Egnater MOD50 (50 watt tube head) was. Just because it's rated at 300w doesn't mean it's as loud as what he might be pushing through that cab. Food for thought.

240w it is then. Thanks guys. I did kind of suspect that the handling capacity would be more than enough, I see people plugging 300w warheads into 240w mesa cabs all the time and no one gets exploded.
