Subject: Peavey Valveking head
I don't know anything about ohms... I guess that'd be a good place to start. What are ohms? And also, what's the smallest amount of speakers that I could plug into, without blowing them up, with a 100watt head? Another question... I have a cheap crate 1x12 (65watt)... If I aqquired the peavey valveking 100watt head, could I play it through the 1x12? I'm on the phone, so I'm very distracted. Feel free to tell me to clarify this vague question. ![]() |

Assuming the "ohms" (which are the resistance rating of the speakers) match, yes, you could play the head through the cabinet.
i.e. if the cabinet/speaker is, for example, 4 ohms, and the amp has a 4ohms output, then plug it in that way and it'll work fine. |

So there's no danger of a 100watt head destroying a 12 inch speaker by itself?

There is if the speaker isnt rated in high enough power (IE, you dime your amp and your speaker is only rated for 80 watts or something).
The easiest thing would to be just buy a small 1x12 or 2x12 cabinet rated for more than 100 watts and you'll be fine. BTW, if you'll be just using the crate for the speaker, DO NOT run your head through the input of or anything on the crate. Just unhook the speaker from the crate and hook it into your head. if you cant do that, then don't even bother, cause then something will get up-fucked. One more question... If I do indeed plug a 100watt head into this crate 1x12... Which would be damaged first if and when there are wattage/ohm/whatever differences?
I certainly would rather have the speaker damaged. ![]() |

Depends. Uh, if you turn your amp loud enough to blow the crate, then when it blows, you'll be running the amp without a load at a no doubt extreme volume, which could damage the head as well.

Thanks again, I just want to be sure before I jump into the world of heads. The 2x12 of the same type (peavey valveking) is still something I'm considering. Besides, I haven't even looked at the dozens of other 2x12 and heads at GC. ![]() |

well, when you have a tube amp, you need a speaker load. If all that power doesnt have a place to go, then it can melt the transformer. Which is very expensive to fix, and can change the sound of the amp if changed.
Its not as big a deal with solid state amps, but the potential is still there. |
