dude, there is no 'tube sound'.

There are tube amps that sound like crap and SS amps that sound more organic and responsive than many other tube amps.

Take for example the clean sound from a fender vibrolux and a roland jazz chorus (solid-state).

It's all taste, dude.

As for distortion, dimebag used SS randall heads and his sound is nothing like what you would get out of a cheap SS amp. Solid-state does not equal solid state. A Tech-21 amp will not sound like a line 6 spider. So don't generalize 'tube sound' and 'solid-state sound'.

i hope this thread doesn't lead to the old tube v/s SS discussion...

Due to the unfortunate circumstance that ALL of the music shops here pander to beginners, the only tube heads available to try out in person are a handful of Marshalls, a few Fenders and little else.

If I could have any amp at all to try in person, it'd be a Rivera Knucklehead Tre or (even better) the new MT7 (basically a Tre with more features and the tone section is voiced a little differently). From the sound samples/videos I've seen online and a few reviews here & there, I get the impression that they're quite amazing.

You know a good tube head is quite pricey, right?
Will you get the chance to use it at it's "sweet spot"?
How many channels? Do you want an FX loop? / on board FX?
We need more info than this to help you.

Too bad your stuck on tubes. The best piece of gear that I've used out there for the whole versatility gig is the Fractal Axe Fx and there isn't a single tube in it.

I know it will take a while for people to hear and believe it but the thing really isn't hype. It's the first modeler out there that delivers on the claims that modelers have made from the beginning.

If it must to tubes and it you want versatile go with either the Randall MTS system or it's higher quality and more expensive big brother the Egnater stuff.

A Road King / Roadster is damn versatile and built like a tank but it can only go so far.

YA!!! aside from there looks they ave a metric ....load of combinations to tinker with + they absolutely sound amazing trust me on that I have a GH50L single channel & the tones I can get from it are very versatile from old rock to metal & maybe some jazz blues stuff also .
