I'm in the market for a new f/x unit to replace my Korg AX1500G. I'm also planning to move to a rack setup at the same time. I'm not sure if I should go with the Pod or the Digitech. I've been thinking of going for the Digitech for some time, but I'm not sure now.
I don't want to have a multi-f/x, preamp and poweramp. I want a decent f/x that I can set all my sounds through and then send to the poweramp. I've tried running my AX1500G through poweramps before, and it just doesn't have enough output without running into a preamp first. Anybody out there run a GNX4 through a poweramp? Does it cut it as a preamp, or would the Pod be a better choice? If I do go for a Pod, is the XTPro really worth it, or would the XTLive be more cost effective? I like the balanced XLR outputs on the Digitech and the XTPro, and the Digitech has the built in drum machine and recorder, which are what really attracts me to it. I also like the "dry" output on the XTPro. I think it would be good for running to a rack tuner. |

Digitech modeling technology sucks! I don't know if you're just wanting to use it for effects or you actually want to use the amp models but, if it's modeling you want then by all means get the Line 6! I would go for the XT live instead of the PRO as well. It's the same thing but you will save about $200 on the actual unit and you don't have to buy one of the $250 floorboards to control it. Also, the Boss GT8 and GT pro are more than worth looking in to. I'm a line 6 man myself but some people swear by these things. If you decide to go the POD route (and I believe you should) email eric@ericsguitars.com and buy one from him. He'll save you quite a bit of money!

I'm after the lot. Amp models, f/x and decent recording capabilities. I want a good unit, as I don't want to be upgrading again next year. I want something that will last a while. I have played a Pod XT Pro, and was very impressed with it. Haven't tried a Live or the Digitech yet.
Doon't think Eric would be much use to me, as I live in the UK. Even if he could sell me a 240V unit, the shipping and import costs would outweigh any cost savings. |

Silly me, I should've lookad at your profile. Anyway, I think you will be much happier with Line 6 than you would Digitech. Like I said, the POD XT live is EXACTLY the same thing as the XT pro stuffed into a handy floor unit and there are many guys using them as preamps with good results. I don't know what the UK prices are but in the US one could save quite a bit more than half going the XT live route and get the exact same results. For example:PODxt PRO = $700 Floorboard = $400 = a total of $1100 for a fully controllable xt PRO PODxt LIVE = $400 and the EXACT same thing! That'd leave you enough money to buy a poweramp! |

The digitech modelling is easily as good as the POD to my ears, plus it has the added versatility of being able to be 'warped' between amp/speaker sounds, to create custom new tones all your own. I've used a GNX3 for the last 3-4 years, and I'm yet to be dissappointed. That being said, I have way more experience with the GNX line, but I also really like the XT/Vetta series. Each one has certain things they bring to the table, and so, either choice is a winner. The POD lacks the recording function of the GNX, and isn't quite as versatile. But, it has better tones 'out of the box', and a great sound is easier to dial in, IMO. When both are tweaked right, I'd say the tones are comparable.

I have the POD XT Live with the Model Packs installed. I absolutely love the tone. I play it through an Atomic Reactor 112 with a BBE DI-100x. I have played through the Digitech as well and found that I could get tones I liked with some effort put into programming it.
Frankly, I would take both. As soon as my wife allows me to I will be buying the GNX4 as well. I am a Jam Man freak and the new Digitech Jam Man pedal is $300 for just the one effect, while the GNX4 has the Jam Man delay effect, plus a mic preamp, a drum machine, hard disk recorder, USB interface, compact flash card drive, and full blown effects lineup. You can plug the POD into the stereo ins of the GNX4 and choose to only run it through the delay and still use the GNX4 as a completely separate FX unit/mixer for bass, vocals, or whatever, mixing the final product at the outputs. I think it would be a perfect setup for a Stick player or solo guitarist who really needs good tone (POD) and swiss army knife FX and functionality (GNX4) all in one simple pedalboard setup. |

I think the POD XT has better sounding amp models than the GNX's (I've had a GNX4 & am now selling my GNX3). They both need to be tweaked A LOT. I think out of all the presets on Line 6 & Digitech, I like a grand total of 2 each. Regarding effects, they both are equal. The effects on the Line 6 are a little more transparent but, you may like the subtle ambience that the Digitech effects add. The GNX's have the Vetta style mixing of two amps though which I must admit, I did not toy around with much. So as I said before with prodigious tweaking either one will work.

Personally I prefer POD Xt. I found that with my GNX1 it took a *lot* of tweaking, via warping amp and cab models, to get a good sound. And once I found that sound and stored it as an amp model, the gain knob for that model didn't behave like you'd expect it to. On the POD I feel like I am able to get good tones more easily.
One plus for the GNX is the Whammy pedal. I wish the POD had that... |
