Mesa 2:90's

Now, i may have the chance to get one, and am wondering if anyone knows sound wise how it would compare to a 6550 or el34 based power amp in terms of sound. WIll it do rawk or will it be very clear and clinical? Can they use el34's?

Having said that, I still like my rivera, but it depends if it can be fixed!

I'd say hit it, the triaxis/2:90 combo is supposed to reign supreme

...plus Jari Maenpaa (sp?) from wintersun uses that combo

It won't sound much like an EL34 based power amp, since 6L6 tubes seem to be more or less the opposite kind of sound. However, it's supposed to be one of the best rack power amps around. It will "rock" just fine, depending on what kind of sound you're going for. That's the power amp Dino uses in his Line 6 rig if that tells you anything. I've heard once of one being modified to take EL34 tubes, but it kept malfunctioning, though it might have just been done wrong.

See, that's what I always kind of worry about. I do like el34's, and 6550's, but have always found 6l6's to err that bit too far over to it being too pristine and clear if that makes any sense. Kind of fender vs marshall.

Maybe i should really road test it side by side to see, although I do kind of think that partially a lot of the sound i dislike from mesa's has to do with their cabs (i preferred dual recs through marshall cabs) rather than the power section.

And yes, it is the perfect match for the triaxis, which is why it is always tempting, and i lurve my triaxis

Well, I don't know why 'clear' would be a bad thing... who wants to sound muddy??

Last show I played at, the singer/guitarist from the band that played before us came up to me after the show and told me he had to get in touch with me to talk gear and tone, because mine sounded phenominal.

Also, during our set, I jumped off stage for a song while another friend from another band that night came up and played Seek n Destroy with my band. So I stood out in the crowd. And from a 'fan's' standpoint, I could hear EVERY note played by him, and my lead guitarist (H&K TriAmp/EL34). So take it for what it's worth. I personally think clarity in tone is all in how you set your preamp's tone. Poweramps just do exactly that... power.

The 2:90 only works with 6L6's. They must be modded to accept EL-34, but then they can only use EL-34's. You can order them this way from Mesa, too. Sorry, but there is no tube switch on these.

I always thought the 2:90 sounded really good with TriAmp, but not much else. It was designed that way, and as such, it doesn't work as well with other preamps.

That isn't true for the 2:100 and the Recto Pre is it?

I don't really have much experience with those, except to say that the separate Recto power and preamps don't sound as good as a Recto head.

Yes, the Recto-Pre and the Recto 2:100 were designed to be used together like the TriAxis/2:90.
