Anyone here ever sell a 5150 for a JSX and regret it?
I've got a 5150 combo (that I love BTW) and a B-52 at-100 combo (that sounds surprisingly good) and I've been thinking about downsizing to just one head.
I've been using a Marshall 1960 AX top (greenbacks) with both of these amps for about a year now and this week I got a Carvin Legacy top loaded with V30's and for what I'm doing (lots of 7 string playing ) it's much better so I'll be selling off the Marshall cab as well. I've been thinking what head will get me between a dual recto sound and a 5150 sound and the JSX keeps popping up as the answer. so has anyone here sold off a 5150 for a JSX and 5 months later regretted it? ![]()
Can I be the devil on your shoulder?

Yeah... I sold my 5150 for a JSX, and ended up not liking the thing. My new 5150 was supposed to arrive on Thursday... but we all know how these things go. As soon as I get in a replacement channel switch and back grill from Peavey (bought mine used and these were broken/missing, respectively, but I got it for cheap, so it didn't matter), it's going on eBay with a low BIN, since I need to grab cash out of it fairly quickly.
The JSX > the XXX, no doubt, but it just isn't as cool as the 5150, IMO. I never use the clean or crunch channels, ever, and the ultra channel has this scratchy high-midrange quality that the mid knob doesn't dial out. |

I don't really get the one or the other comparisons between the JSX and 5150. They're totally different amps, and don't really sound like one another. I personally hate the 5150 and love the JSX. DIfferent strokes for different folks. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing they have in common is the brand.

well THERE'S your problem! you only use the ultra channel!!! the crunch channel on the JSX is what pretty much makes the amp. the ultra channel sounds good if you keep the gain below 4. I like the tone of 5150's, and i use my crunch channel to get a similar sound. have you tried a JSX out?
3 cheers for free gear!

well that's the problem I have tried one out but it was real brief and at low volume.
I thought it sounded 1/2 way between a dual recto and a 5150 (which BTW is what I'm looking for) but I may have had my head up my ass that day. If I can get a smoother 5150-ish tone out of it I will be all set. I loved the ultrra channel (we were checking out a Hellraiser 7) at low volume but I couldn't really give it a "real workout". Also can you voice the crunch and Ultra channels differently or are they the same sounding channel with different levels of gain? |
