First of all I really wasn't sure on where to put this one, sorry mods if its in the wrong place or could've been put in a better place.

I have been modding an old strat I've owned for some time now, its been hard what with college and university always getting in the way so now I've got the summer to do it I thought I'd...y'know, do it.

Anyway, I sprayed it bright-fucking-orange with auto-paint and it looks shit hot. Now has come the time to clear-coat it.

I put the first coat on today using a clear-coat that works with the paint I used. Here is the question, after the first coat the texture was a lil' bit rough, is it supposed to be rough and I've just to wet sand it smooth or have I fucked up somewhere along the line? lol

To be fair I'm not too fussed about this guitar, its going to be a beater anyway and I'm installing a killswitch, changing p'ups etc and will probably one of very few 6's I keep in my collection -- but it would still be nice to know for future reference.

Yes, that's normal. It's whats called "orange peal" cause, well, it has the texture of an orange peal. Wet sanding and buffing is what gives it that glass like shine and smoothness.

you'll get orange peel from time to time it is all dependant on your spraying pattern the viscosity of the paint the environment your in etc. just use a very low grit sand paper and wet sand it. after a few coats of clear you'll shit at the beauty and depth of that orange. Also be careful not to get fish eye in your paint just spray clean and make sure your paint's or clears are mixed well and you have proper pressure and gun to part distance when you spray and even solid strokes.

Like starting your spray before you actually spray the body and ending it after or right before you go back and forth on your strokes

Hehe, yeah my Dad taught me that one....2 years ago when I started the project

I've been slacking to say the least. I should get it done in a few weeks (including p'ups and all electronic mods etc...)

i know donnies the expert on this so, are you supposed to wet sand inbetween every coat, do you wet sand the paint too? and the last layer of clear, do you wet sand it also, then buff, or do you just buff the last layer

+1 you have more paint to "rub through" if you do it this way, if you do it after each layer you have the chance of wearing through it and screwing it up.

I sanded it earlier and it got rid of all the little imperfections Just added whats going to be the last coat of clear coat on the body and its looking shit hot

Next step is to come up with a logo for the headstock and clear-coat that.
