As long as you're not looking for an amp with on board distortion, they're great! They're probably about the best amps in their price range. I haven't used one myself, but I've heard them a lot, and I've heard a lot about them. Pretty much everyone that's played one loves them, and what I've heard of them does give me the impression that they're pretty sweet little amps. I plan to get one myself at some point for practice or something.

the valve junior is 5W of class A classic rock crunch. turn the volume down, it cleans up really nicely.

i dont think these amps are going to be too good for modern stuff (unless you EQ the hell out of one or something), but for cleans and classic tones, hard to go wrong. the VJ pushing a 412 is actually pretty freakin loud. I havent heard the standard w/ the DSP, or the blues 212.

3 cheers for free gear!

Translation: great sounding, low to mid-gain tube amp that would also sound great with a decent distortion pedal or modeller hooked up, yes?

pretty much, yeah. i dont know if my friend with the VJ has his boss twin drive pedal hooked up to his VJ, i'll talk to him and see how it handles modern driven tones (he has it running a 408 cab)
